Pertanyaan yang sering muncul dalam soal-soal TOEFL yaitu dihilangkannya subjek atau kata kerja atau kedua-duanya. Yang perlu Anda lakukan adalah dengan menemukan subjek atau kata kerja, kemudian analisa jawaban dengan melihat kata yang hilang.

Pembahasannya:1. Teridentifikasi terdapat sebuah kata kerja yaitu was sehingga diperlukan subjek untuk melengkapi pernyataan tersebut.2. (A) bukan subjek, (B) bukan subjek, (C) subjek, (D) subjek3. Sekarang tinggal 2 pilihan kemungkinan jawaban, sekarang tinggal dilihat yang lebih tepat.4. Karena was merupakan kata kerja tunggal, maka jawaban yang tepat adalah (C) yang merupakan subjek tunggal.

Dan terakhir Anda akan mempelajari tentang Present Participle. Present participle adalah kata kerja (verb) yang ditambah ing (verb + ing). Present participle berbeda dengan gerunds. Fungsi present participle dapat sebagai kata kerja (verb) dan juga dapat sebagai kata sifat (adjective).

- Merupakan bagian dari kata kerja bila terdapat bentuk be (is, am, are) di depan kata kerja.Contoh: The train is arriving at the station now.Dalam kalimat ini, kata arriving sebagai kata kerja karena diikuti bentuk be (is).

- Merupakan bagian dari kata sifat bila tidak terdapat bentuk be (is, am, are) di depan kata kerja.Contoh: The train arriving at the station now is an hour late.Dalam kalimat ini, kata arriving sebagai kata sifat karena kata kerja sudah ada pada kata is.

Contoh Soal TOEFL: The film _______ appearing at the local theater is my favorite.(A). now(B). is (C). it (D). was

Pembahasannya:1. Dapat dilihat bahwa kata The film merupakan subjek.2. Dapat juga terlihat bahwa terdapat kata kerja yaitu kata is.3. (A) kata pelengkap, (B) kata kerja, (C) subjek, (D) kata kerja4. Jawaban yang benar adalah (A).

SOAL TOEFL DAN PEMBAHASAN JAWABAN (STRUCTURE TEST 3)Tes TOEFL ITP terbagi atas 3 sesi: listening comprehension, structure and written expression, dan reading comprehension.

Sesi structure and written epxression terdiri dari 40 soal dengan lama pengerjaan soal 25 menit. Soal sesi ke dua ini terbagi atas dua jenis yaitu structure yang dimulai dari nomor 1 sampai 15 dan soal written expression yang dimulai dari nomor 16 sampai 40.

TRIK TOEFL 2 SWE: Hati2 dengan Object, bisa2 kita terjebak :)Dalam Bahasa Inggris ada dua jenis object: Object of a Transitive Verb (kata kerja perlu object) dan Object of a Preposition (misal on, at, in, behind, by, of, to dll). Ini sering kali digunakan oleh penulis soal toefl untuk menjebak atau membingungkan peserta test. Dengan kata lain, peserta test harus jeli melihat apakah object yang ada pada kalimat soal itu, object dari kata kerjanya atau object dari preposition... Tujuan lain dari penulis soal adalah untuk membingungkan peserta test apakah sebuah kata merupakan subject kalimat atau object dari preposition.

Contoh soal: 

For the last five years at various hospital in the country __________ has been practicing medicine.A nowB thatC beforeD a midwife

Penulis soal ingin menjebak peserta test yg tidak tahuobject of a preposition, seolah2 the country merupakansubject dari has been practicing... Padahal the countrymerupakan object dari preposition in. Kalau mau kita plot kalimat soal diatas, ada 3 prepositional phrase (kelompok kata yg diawali oleh preposition) yaitu For the last five years, at various hospital, dan in the country. Dari situ kita tahu bahwa sebenarnya soal diatas yg hilang adalahsubject jadi cari saja pilihan yg layak jadi subject kalimat, sehingga jawaban yg benar adalah D :)

TRIK TOEFL 1 SWE: Subject dan VerbKetika kita membaca soal2 SWE, hal utama yang harus kita lakukan yaitu memplot kalimat kedalam kelompok2 bermakna dengan cara mencari tahu mana Subject, Verb, Object, dan Adverb. Dari ke 4 itu, yg paling utama harus diketahui adalah Subject dan Verb karena soal TOEFL kebanyakan menghilangkan Subject dan Verb pada kalimat soal untuk dianalisa atau ditanyakan. Bahkan di soal2 yg tingkat kesulitannya lebih tinggi, bisa saja Subject ada 2 atau lebih, Verb ada 2 atau lebih. Bahkan tampa tahu makna kalimat soalpun, kita tetap bisa mencari jawaban yang benar asal kita paham mana Subject, Verb, dan Word Classes lainnya.WARNING: HINDARI MENGERJAKAN SOAL DENGAN CARA MENTERJEMAHKAN KALIMAT SOAL KARENA AKAN MENGHABISKAN WAKTU.

Contoh Barang 1:

Teachers _______________ for the new region.

A. importantB. next weekC. are neededD. hopefully

Setelah dianalisa soal diatas, Subject ADA, verb TIDAK ADA, jadi jawabannya adalah yg berbentuk Verb. Klo nasib baik cuma ada satu pilihan seperti soal diatas, jadi jawabannya C. Tapi klo ada 2 atau lebih yg berbentuk Verb, kita harus mengerucutkan permasalahannya seperti APAKAH KALIMAT TERSEBUT AKTIF ATAU PASSIVE dll.

Yesterday ______________ found an interesting article on IT.

Setelah dianalisa soal diatas, yang hilang SUBJECT, jadi pilihlah jawaban yang berbentuk Subject, jawaban yg benar adalah C.

Section 3 Reading Comprehension (RC)RC ini yg sering kali tidak terjawab semua oleh peserta tes. Sebagian besar peserta tes menjawab soal no 41 sd 50 asal2an dikarenakan kekurangan waktu ditambah lagi otak sudah terasa diperas2 karena RC merupakan section terakhir dari tes TOEFL. Bahkan ada peserta menjawab 50% dari jumlah soal tampa membaca passage nya lagi hehehe bagaimakmana mo dapet score yg diharapkan klo cara mengerjakannya sperti ini?Sebelum penulis menjelaskan seluk beluk RC, mari kita analisa dulu RC ini. Si pembuat soal tentunya sudah mengukur dengan teliti kemampuan seorang peserta dalam menjawab semua soal. Artinya bahwa klo rekan2 sudah ahli dalam bahasa Inggris, bisa menjawab 50 soal dalam waktu 55 menit. Hal ini bisa mungkin klo kita menjawabnya dengan menggunakan trik, skill ato apalah namanya. Yang jelas 50 soal bisa dijawab oleh seseorang dalam waktu 55 menit saja.Soal biasanya terdiri dari 5 sd 6 passage dan masing2 passage bervariasi jumlah pertanyaannya, sehingga total pertanyaan untuk semua artikel itu berjumlah 50 buah.Timbul pertanyaan apa iya? Membaca passage nya saja sudah memerlukan waktu yang lama.... apalagi untuk menjawabnya? Sebenarnya semua pertanyaan bisa disiasati cara menjawabnya demi menghemat waktu, dan sangat bergantung pada kemampuan dasar bahasa inggris dan latar belakang ilmu si peserta tes. Seseorang yang hobby membaca akan jauh leih mudah memahami passage dibandingkan yang jarang sekali membaca.Umumnya hampir semua pertanyaan di Section 3 RC ini bisa dijawab dengan membaca soalnya dulu, kemudian mencari jawaban yang diperlukan dalam passage. Tetapi ada juga pertanyaan yang memang memerlukan detail jawaban seperti menanyakan tentang misal "what's the passage about?" Disini kita memang perlu membaca agak lebih teliti tetapi itu semua bisa disiasati dan akan dijelaskan pada artikel2 berikutnya.Contoh soal RC dan akan dibahas secara umum. Secara detailnya, penulis akan membahasnnya satu persatu di artikel2 berikutnya :)

The supply of wood conferred advantagesbut had some negative aspects as well. Iron atthat time was produced by heating iron ore withcharcoal. Because Britain was so stripped oftrees, she was unable to exploit her rich ironmines. But the American colonies had both ironore and wood; iron production was encouragedand became successful. However, when Britaindeveloped coke smelting, the Colonies did notfollow suit because they had plenty of wood andbesides, charcoal iron was stronger than cokeiron. Coke smelting led to technologic innovationsand was linked to the emergence of theIndustrial Revolution. In the early nineteenthcentury, the former colonies lagged behindBritain in industrial development because theirsupply of wood led them to cling to charcoaliron. (Paragraph 4)

Dalam menjawab soal no 1 ini, kita tidak perlu membaca keseluruhan passage. Baca saja kalimat pertama masing2 paragraph. Hal pertama yg harus diperhatikan untuk jenis soal yg menanyakan topik adalah apakah yg ditanyakan topik passage atau masing2 topik paragraphnya? Soal diatas menanyakan topik passage bearti kita harus mencari jawaban yg mengcover semua paragraph yg ada di passage tersebut. Dalam hal ini jawaban yg benar adalah B karena passage tersebut membahas tentang the plentiful supply of wood in the colonies and the advantages and disadvantages this involved.Jawaban A tidak benar karena cuma advantages saja sedangkan passage juga membahas tentang disadvantages (paragraph 4), jawaban C salah karena fokusnya Industrial Revolution. Jawaban D salah karena fokusnya perbedaan antara charcoal iron dengan coke iron. :)

Inilah gunanya membaca soal dulu baru mengacu ke passage. Soal jenis diatas menanyakan tentang vocabulary jadi fokus saja pada kalimat yg mengandung kata yg ditanyakan. Dalam soal ini yg ditanyakan adalah kata strikingly, kalimat yg mengandung kata tersebut adalah The technology of the North American colonies did not differ strikingly from that of Europe, but in one respect, the colonists enjoyed a great advantage. Dari konteks diatas, kata strikinglymendekati makna dramatically. Detail mengenai bagaimana kita bisa memgetahui makna kata akan dibahas diartikel2 berikutnya. Makna kata yg tepat hanya bisa didapat dari kalimat yg menggunakan kata tersebut, Guessing Meaning from Contacts.

Dari kalimat pertama paraghraph kedua "The first colonists did not, as many people imagine, find an entire continent covered by a climax forest.” ini kita bisa menentukan jawaban yg benar. Soal ini kata kuncinya gunpowder dan paragraph 3, jadi langsung saja ke paragraph 3 dan cari kalimat yg mrngandung kata tersebut. Didapatlah kalimat "wood was the source of industrial compounds, and charcoal is given as an example. Charcoal is a component of gunpowder." Jadi jawabannya B. :)

7. The phrase follow suit in paragraph 4means(A) do the same thing.(B) make an attempt.(C) have the opportunity.(D) take a risk.

Dalam menjawab soal seperti ini, langsung saja baca paragraph yg dimaksud. Soal diatas tentang paragraph 4, jadi langsung saja ke paragraph 4 dan baca dengan teliti kalimat yg ada kata follow suit nya. However, when Britain developed coke smelting, the Colonies did not follow suit because they had plenty of wood and besides, charcoal iron was stronger than coke iron.Kalimat ini mengandung makna bertentangan dengan apa yg diungkapkan sebelumnya. Jadi jawabannya A. Lagi2 tentangvocabulary yg akan dibahas secara detail di artikel2 berikutnya :)

Jawaban yg benar adalah A.

Praktek Structure and Written ExpressionDibawah ini ada 5 soal Structure and Written Expression. Silahkan rekan2 jawab dulu dan post di comment klo sempet :) sambil penulis bahas satu persatu dan di post jawabannya di msg2 soal. Maaf yg LC belum krn terkendala audionya... terima kasih.

Dalam menjawab soal2 SWE, hal pertama yg harus kita ketahui adalah kalimat utama (main sentence) dari soal tersebut. Seperti soal diatas kalimat utamanya sudah ada Martha Graham didn’t begin dancing until she was 21. Bearti diantara koma tidak bisa dalam bentuk kalimat, jawaban yang benar adalah C. Fungsi ungkapan diantara koma sebagai appositive (menjelaskan subject kalimat utama)

2. There are thousand of different types of roses.       A               B                C               DJawabannya jelas B karena to be nya dlm bentuk jamak are,There sudah benar karena are tidak digaris bawahi,different sebagai adjective menjelaskan types, ofpreposition menghubungkan kata types dan roses.

3. Sponges have neither heads or separate body organs.         A                  B               C                  DDisini permasalahannya adalah fixed pattern, either...or, neither....nor, not only....but also, jadi jawabannya jelas C :)

1825.Di soal ini kalimat utamanya adalah The use of natural gas was in the town. Jadi kata it tidak diperlukan lagi karena double subject. Jawabannya adalah C.

Jadi setiap memulai mengerjakan soal2 SWE, biasakan untuk mencari kalimat utama dari soal, baru kemudian menganalisa kemungkinan2 lainnya... semoga bermanfaat... salam :)

Section 2 Structure and Written Expression (SWE)SWE ini terdiri dari 40 soal, 15 soal Structure dan 25 soal Written Expression. Dalam menjawab soal Structure, kita mencari yang benar dari 4 jawaban yang tersedia sedangkan untuk soal Written Expression kita mencari Yang salah dari 4 jawaban yang tersedia. Untuk lebih jelasnya, berikut contoh barangnya :)

Contoh Soal Structure:Sometimes __________ to place physics and chemistry into separare caragories.A. difficultB. is difficultC. it is difficultD. that it is difficult

Dalam menjawab soal type ini, biasanya yg dicari yg benar dari 4 pilihan jawaban. Pertama yg harus kita lakukan ialah membagi2 kalimat kedalam kelompok2 (akan dijelaskan secara rinci pada postingan berikutnya). Kita lihat kalimat diatas belum ada subject dan verb, bearti jawaban yg benar yg ada subject dan verbnya yaitu C. Mengapa D salah padahal ada subject dan verb juga? Karena di jawaban D ada connector 'that', connector bearti ada yg dihubungkan sedangkan kata 'sometimes' cuma kata keterangan dan dalam konteks ini tidak perlu connector. 

Sekarang kita lihat contoh soal Written Expression berikut ini:A principle of manager is to ensure that every action ordecision achieves a carefully planned goal.                           A                                           B   C                                        D

(Note: A. manager     B. action      C. decision       D. planned. Penulis beri catatan disini krn setelah di preview, susunannya berubah... msh gaptek... maaf :) )

Dalam menjawab soal type ini, Written Expression (WE), yang kita cari adalah yang salah dari pilihan jawaban yang digaris bawahi. Untuk mencari yang salah, kita harus berpatokan pada yang benar yaitu semua kata atau ungkapan yang TIDAK digarisbawahi. Untuk jawaban soal diatas, yang benar adalah A, mengapa? karena kata "manager" tidak sesuai dengan makna kalimat, key word nya adalah "principle". Seharusnya "management" BUKAN "manager".

Section 1 Listening Comprehension (LC)Section 1 ini terdiri dari 3 bagian: Part A, Part B dan Part C.

Jumlah soal pada Part A sebanyak 30 soal. Jawaban yang benar didapat dengan cara mencari pilihan jawaban yang tersedia (a, b, c, d) yang mempunyai makna yang sama dengan soal, umumnya makna yang disampaikan oleh pembicara kedua didalam percakapan tersebut. Dengan kata lain kita dituntut untuk mampu mencari sinonym atau paraphrase (kalimat beda tetapi bermakna sama misal He almost failed in his exam = He passed his test) dari percakapan yang diputar.

Untuk lebih jelasnya, pelajari contoh soal berikut ini:

On the recording, you hear:

Man: Did the professor collect the assignment? Woman: No. But I gave him mine anyway.Narator: What does the woman mean?

A. But I handed in mine anyway.B. But I gave him a hand anyway.C. But I went hand in hand with him anyway.D. But I put my hands on it anyway.

PEMBAHASANJawaban yang benar adalah A karena cuma A yang bermakna sama dengan soal

(gave him = handed in). Jawaban B merupakan jebakan krn makna kalimatnya berbeda dengan soal.I gave him mine anyway = Saya memberikan tugas saya kepada professor.I gave him a hand anyway = Saya membantu profesor. Jawaban C & D maknanya sangat berbeda dengan maksud kalimat di soal.

Timbul pertanyaan, klo percakapannya dalam bentuk tulisan diatas ya... Cukup mudah untuk mencari jawaban yg benar, bagaimakmana klo dalam bentuk listening? Jawabannya pantengin terus blog ini karena ada sesi nantinya yg khusus membahas bagaimakmana memahami listening dengan mudah :)

Bisa kita simpulkan disini bahwa untuk mendapatkan jawaban yg benar pada Listening Comprehension Part A, kita harus mengerti dulu percakapan di soal, tetapi bukan bearti kita harus memahami semua kata yang ada pada percakapan tersebut. Kita cukup memahami inti dari percakapan tersebut untuk menjawab soal. Pembahasan lebih rinci akan dijelaskan dalam tulisan berikutnya. 

Berikutnya adalah Listening Comprehension Part B & Part C. Kedua bagian ini sebenarnya hampir sama fokusnya, menjawab pertanyaan berdasarkan percakapan yang agak panjang. Jumlah soal kedua bagian ini hanya 20, masing2 jumlah soalnya bervariasi bergantung pada percakapan yang di dengar. Banyak yang beranggapan Part B & Part C sulit karena kita harus mendengar percakapan yang panjang dan diikuti 3 sd 5 soal berkenaan dengan percakapan yang baru kita dengar, tidak seperti pada Part A, satu percakapan satu pertanyaan.

Kenyataannya adalah Part B & Part C lebih mudah, bahkan terkadang jauh lebih mudah dibandingkan dengan Part A. Bagaimakmana ini bisa terjadi? Pada Part A kita dituntut untuk memahami apa yang sedang dibicarakan dan mencari sinonym atau paraphrase nya dengan cepat. Sedangkan Pada Part B & Part C terkadang apa yang kita dengar, itulah jawabannya. Jadi waktu rekan2 mengerjakan LC Part B & Part C JANGAN MEMEJAMKAN MATA sewaktu mendengarkan soal (sering kali ini dilakukan peserta tes seolah2 lagi fokus mendengar hehehe), bahkan harus membuka mata memperhatikan pilihan2 jawaban sambil mendengarkan percakapan di soal. Yang lebih baik lagi adalah rekan2 harus mengatur waktu sebaik mungkin untuk mengalokasikan waktunya memahami pilihan2 jawaban di Part B & Part C. Ini sangat membantu mendapatkan jawaban yang benar. Yang biasa penulis lakukan adalah membaca semua pilihan jawaban pada saat audio player memperdengarkan instruction untuk masing2 Part (pahami pilihan jawaban Part B pada saat audio player memutar instruction untuk Part B dan begitu juga dengan Part C).

Dengan kata lain, kita harus mendengarkan soal sambil melihat pilihan jawaban yang tersedia, dan terkadang apa yang didengar itulah jawabannya, kalaupun ada soal yg meminta jawaban sinonym atau paraphrase, tidak akan sesulit Part A. Untuk lebih jelasnya penulis akan memberikan contoh soal sehingga rekan2 bisa memahami penjelasan diatas, tapi tidak sekarang yaaa..... Hehehe

PRACTICE PASSAGE

The Alaska pipeline starts at the frozen edge of the Arctic Ocean.

It stretches southward across the largest and northernmost state in

the United States, ending at a remote ice-free seaport village nearly

Line 800 miles from where it begins. It is massive in size and extremely

The steel pipe crosses windswept plains and endless miles of

delicate tundra that tops the frozen ground. It weaves through

crooked canyons, climbs sheer mountains, plunges over rocky
