Eko Nugroho’s solo exhibition
Landscape Anomaly feels a bit
more meaningful than most,
because of its rather long process.
We first began talking about the
possibly putting on an exhibition
in 2013. Then, we slowly moved
closer toward a fully-realized
exhibition. On good days, we kept
our feet firmly on the ground
and resisted complacency. When
difficulties arose or drama
came uninvited, we continued
to press on and kept our head
down. And in this case, we are
very fortunate to partner with
someone as tough as Eko Nugroho.

The works in Landscape
Anomaly resulted
from a combination of
conceptualization, unique
visual imagination, and a
strong response by the artist
to Salihara Gallery’s unique
space and layout. Some of the
works have been created right
here, inside the exhibition
space, influenced by everything
that happened around us.
For us, this exhibition is one
of Komunitas Salihara’s most
complex art programs, because
of the many aspects weaving
in and out of one another, each
with its own complexity. And
so it gladdens our heart to be
able to finally present the fruits
of this amazing partnership.
Hopefully you enjoy the
exhibition as much as we have
enjoyed every step and every
experience of putting it together.

“underground art”: mass
culture (comics, cartoons,
etc), street art, and folk
art. Eko is not just taking

embroiderers to create
various embroidered
paintings. And so we can
perhaps say that this “pop
art” is an answer to “pure

that have dominated the
mainstream of Indonesian

the 1980s. The first wave

yang giat pada akhir 1990-an sampai pertengahan 2000-an.
the 1990s to mid-2000s.
Eko Nugroho’s works are
transformations of comic
images, graffiti, cartoons,
and all sorts of motifs that
can be found in everything
other than high art. He can
paint anywhere—on canvas or
on walls, inside an exhibition
space, or on city walls, for
Dagingtumbuh’s T-shirts
and Louis Vuitton scarves.
With thick black contours,
he creates various human
figures with cardboard-box
heads, mutated people,
half-alien humans, as well
as humans enshrouded in
mechanical parts, animal
skin, or some other kind of
shroud (that nobody quite
knows). In short, humans that
have been transformed into
half-machine-half-animal
beings. His works often
contain Yogyakarta-style
puns, or parodies of sermons,
proverbs, maxims, and
political jargons; the texts
can even take a serious tone
and be made in English (and
not Standard English either,
even very often mixed with
Javanese words). All of these
elements flow into his three-
dimensional works as well.
Eko Nugroho’s art is also
a product of his effort to
deconstruct Indonesian
ornamentation. He has
dispelled the traditions
that support this system of
ornamentation. A sharp eye
may recognize, for instance,
kawung (a traditional
Javanese batik pattern) or

the sisik (scales) motif of
Javanese wooden roofs. We
can say that Eko Nugroho’s
works are extensions of
“decorativism” in Indonesian
modern art. This is a type of
orientation that, since the
1950s to the recent past,
has breathed life into a
decorative style inspired by
a variety of ethnic elements
created as a reaction to
mondial non-figurative art.
However, unlike decorative
artists of old, this artist
(who was born in 1977)
is no longer burdened by
exoticism or orientalism.
In Eko Nugroho’s
current exhibition, we will
see—or more precisely,
experience—a landscape,
i.e. a combination of
various “plausible”
landscapes: agricultural
landscape, views of villages,
cityscapes, outer space,
underwater scape. All of
them appear in harmony,
or in contention with each
other, in various situations,

Or, the combination of many
landscapes have lent itself to an

thread between outer space—

Certainly, their connections
are outside of the viewer’s

in the smallest details within
the exhibition space: perhaps,
if we recognize the form of a

palmyra palm leaves put on his

but it doesn’t emit sound; rather,
it brandishes swords. In this

foreign being layered over
something familiar; it is an anomaly
that reminds us of what’s normal.
Certainly, the anomaly refers to
the whole of the potential that
emerges from the way we view art
and politics, especially through Eko
Nugroho’s works. For instance, is it
possible for us to act subversively
while still interconnected with
humor? Anomaly is a commitment
to tear down, roll away, and twist
around what are considered
as standard, in an enjoyable
and communicative way.
EKO NUGROHO’s sojourn into the
Indonesian art field and global art
field is not a journey up a stairway
to heaven, but a journey sideways,
traversing, wrapped within the
echo of an origin that is distinctly
not heavenly. His childhood and
teenage years were spent in the
kampong of Prawirodirjan in the
bank of Kali Code in Yogyakarta. It
was a childhood whose echoes can
be experienced in his works today.
Pating tlecek is Eko Nugroho’s
favorite Javanese phrase—
which he uses as the title for his
exhibition In the Name of Pating
Tlecek (Nadi Gallery, 2009), and for
a book detailing the construction of
his studio-home, The Pating Tlecek
Architectural Space (published in
2012). The phrase is usually used
to refer to objects or elements
scattered about irregularly, as in a
spillage or something bursting out
from a known or unknown source;
perhaps something trivial that
disrupts our view, or something
that is subversive to the very
things that accommodate it.
19
Pating tlecek itself is a Javanese
phrase to refer, for instance, to
the mess of avian droppings inside
a coop or on the yard. However,
I think that the informal sector
in large cities can be considered
as pating tlecek, too: they are
residues of the formal sector that
are quickly scattered, multiplying
within themselves, and playing
tag with modern economy and
law enforcement. Pating tlecek
can also refer to the existence of
a kampong or shantytown in the
midst of a large city: residential
pockets that grow without rhyme
or reason, tailing urbanization,
fighting against the logic of urban
planning that is forced onto it.
The same goes with “marginal
culture” that has been nurtured
by kampongs in big cities, like
Eko Nugroho’s Prawirodirjan
area along Kali Code, where the
child Eko digested whatever

daerah) sekaligus muntahan budaya global.

culture, regional culture), and the
regurgitation of global culture.

superheroes, animal masks

imported cartoons on television—
all of these things peacefully
coexisted in Eko Nugroho’s

The history of Indonesian
modern art also demonstrates
pating tlecek characteristics: it
has no national museums, no
historiography, no historians, and
no archives. All of its artifacts
and all of the perceptions ever
formed about it are spread around
in the laps of collectors, in artists’
studios, and art spaces—most of
them have become inaccessible
to the public, or even to those
who want to be artists. And so
it’s only natural if artist-hopefuls

their own communities, by all the
objects and images regurgitated

by global mass culture, until
the day comes when they cross
their teenage years, only to
find themselves completely
shocked by the art community
or art school they enter.
Yogyakarta is also a
special region in a completely
different way—other than
administratively—because of
its pating tlecek situation. The
passage of time has clearly left its
marks on Yogyakarta, all tangled
together into what it is today—
Old Mataram, Islamic Mataram,
British and Dutch colonization,
Indonesian national revolution,
and all the different sociopolitical
periods afterwards, up until the
Reformation era. Despite its
strong orientation toward the
Sultan’s palace and persistence
to its traditional Javanese roots,
Yogyakarta has also established
itself as an important site for
experimentations in contemporary
theater, literature, and visual art.
The city whose present is its
past (Javanese culture, with its
tiered language), is also a very
scholarly city, with nationally
acclaimed intellectuals and
scholars who are critical about
every type of establishment,
including political establishment.
Throughout the years, the
Indonesian art history has
compacted itself in Yogyakarta:
S. Sudjojono and Affandi (two
founders of Indonesian modern
art), Indonesian Academy of Fine
Art, the various leftist studios,
“abstract geometric” school,
decorativism, New Art Movement,
and even the various tendencies
(in post-New Order period) that

managed to detach themselves
from national modernism. All
of them have managed to find
a home in this city, each with
their own ambitions to suit their
eras. Pating tlecek: all of them
are scattered about, sticking
“parasitically”, to the Indonesian
dream of modernization.
And so, Eko Nugroho emerged
precisely from the midst of this
sociocultural landscape. His
works were first introduced to
the public in 2000. As mentioned
above, Eko Nugroho is of the
third wave of Yogyakarta’s “pop
art” school; and “pop art” is the
third way that has differentiated
itself from the two ways that
have existed within the history of
Indonesian art, i.e. “pure art” or
“engaged art”. I think that “pure
art” and “engaged art” both live
by a certain kind of heroism;
both forms are derived from
the “visible soul” principle, first
introduced by the pioneers of
Indonesian modern paintings.
Visible soul, or jiwa tampak, is a
principle that fights for personal
or national identity. “Fine art”
hopes to achieve the fineness
or pureness of visual language
(“abstractionism” in paintings,
for instance), but it can also fight
for the principles of “national
culture as the culmination or
pinnacle of regional cultures”
(in “decorativism”, for instance).
On the other hand, “engaged
art” fights to make social issues
known, to side with the oppressed
and to take the oppressors to
task. Meanwhile “pop art” does
not fight. It plays. As though it
has rejected its high art legacy in
favor of low art. To play is to pick

up the pating tlecek, the various
traces or residues that have been
left scattered across the paths of
both “pure art” and “engaged art”,
even in the various landscapes
that form the backgrounds of both
paths. Pop characteristics in Eko
Nugroho’s art have turned both
heroism and condescension, as
found in various sociopolitical
narratives, on their heads.
TO BE inside Eko Nugroho’s
current exhibition is to be able
to choose whether to experience
everything as a whole or just
parts of it. If we choose to see
the whole of it, then we might
witness a kind of theater stage
with multiple focuses and multiple
stories where every viewpoint
has its own spectacle. Perhaps,
what will “stop” our uncurbed
overflowing fantasies are the
texts that form, or are part of,
the artworks, such as the words
nasionalisme (nationalism),
demokrasi (democracy), kawasan

berjilbab (this area is only for
those wearing a headscarf),
“ junkfood is prosperity”.
However, if we want to affix
political interpretation onto
something, there will always be
a force or energy that will pull
us back into an intuitive game, to
make us become somewhat like
a child again. And the reverse
is also true: behind that brisk
and joyous theater stage, lurks
a kind of tension, something that
tastes a bit sour or even bitter.
This is the exhibition’s pating
tlecek character. This is in line
with what’s been mentioned
above regarding the combination
of many landscapes. But at this
point, the combination is perhaps
better regarded as tension.
The connection between the
outer spacescape (or the under-
seascape—painted on the wall,
in a fantasy-comic style), and
the agricultural landscape (a
