period of 2010 was threatened not tomeet the target set by the Bali Indus-try and Trade Services. Until Novem-ber 2010, the target at volume in-crease and value of export commodi-ties was set at 5 percent but was onlyreached 1.6 percent.

Head of Bali Industry and TradeServices, Gede Darmaja, admitted tofind difficulty in meeting the exporttarget for 2010 projected to increaseby five percent from the year 2009.Many components of the commod-ity declined last year. Even, based onthe data of the Bali’s export realiza-tion between January and Novem-ber 2010 was recorded to face a de-cline in 25 export commodities.

“Indeed, the data of December arenot received from some regions.Hopefully, we can reach up to 5 per-cent in this December, although it’squite difficult,” said Darmaja inDenpasar, Friday (Jan 21).

According to Darmaja, the com-modities undergoing the most signifi-cant decrease consisted of silverhandicraft falling by 62.13 percent, and furniture decreased by 26.1 per-cent. In reality, the two export com-modities provided significant valueto the export of Bali.

A number of travel agents in Australia are beginning to question about the condition of Balifollowing the discovery of nine citizens who were tested positive to Legionnaire pneumonia (LP)virus. However, the Garuda Indonesia air carrier serving the route of Denpasar-Australia statedthat the condition had not affected the number of their visits to the Island of the Gods.

In the meantime, the owner ofAWI Tour, Nyoman Kandia, sepa-rately revealed that the impact ofLP virus in Bali did not influencethe activities of tourists. Up tothese days, the number of touristvisits, especially the Australianmarket to Bali, remained stable. Anumber of markets, including thosebeing vulnerable to the influenceof the issue, were not affected bythe issue on LP virus. “Until now, there has been no decline in thenumber of tourist visits due to theLP issue, although there are a num-ber of tourists wondering about thedispersion of LP as reported bysome media,” he added.

However, Kandia did hope, thegovernment could take preventive

measures to curb the dispersion ofthe LP virus starting from the en-trance of the airport until the dis-persion within the community. Byserious handling, the doubts oftourists against the LP issue in Balicould be answered.

“As a spearhead of tourism per-petrator, we will also keep on pro-viding the correct explanationabout the real condition of Balifrankly and objectively,” he said.

Bali Government Tourism Of-fice noted that the arrival of Aus-tralian tourists to Bali during theperiod of January to November2010 reached 585.140 people or anincrease of 46.72 percent if com-pared to the same period in 2009reaching 398.809 people. Corn harvest in Nusa Penida failsFarmers suffer a loss of hundreds of thousands

“Moreover, their size is small,” hesaid while adding that due to smalland few harvest results, he founddifficulty to get good seed of cornfor cultivation in the next plantingseason. Besides, he also suffered aloss of hundreds of thousands ofrupiahs. Today, the price of cornwas IDR 3,000 per kilogram.

It was mentioned, the crop fail-ure was due to inappropriate rains, especially for the corn plant. Whenthe corn began to bear fruit, it re-quired a lot of water but it did notrain precisely. As a result, the cornwas unable to grow properly. Con-versely, when the water was notneeded, it even rained. Other thancausing the size of corn to growsmaller, the rain falling when thecorn plants did not require wateralso caused the corn to perish.

Losses or harvest failure wasalso experienced by other cornfarmers throughout the East NusaPenida. The corn also known asproducer of carbohydrate otherthan rice is now no longer reliable.Local residents admitted they hadto do various things to get a job thatcould bring any results to meettheir living needs. Additionally, other crops they cultivated such ascassava and others did not producemaximum tubers.

“Yes, now we are entering arather famine season in NusaPenida. However, on the one hand, the rainy season makes the reser-voir of local residents full of wa-ter. Hopefully, this could becomea water reserve for the next sea-son,” said another resident, NengahRana. (kmb20)

Darmaja added that silver andwood commodities were very influ-ential to Bali’s export commoditiesas a whole. Not to mention that bothmain commodities were still experi-encing difficulty in the supply of rawmaterials. “The problem lies in theamount of raw material getting moreand more restricted. Moreover, someregions had tightened the sellingpolicy of the raw materials, mainlywood,” he said.

He claimed the government hadtried to bring in wood supply fromother regions, such as Kalimantan.“Government is also attempting to ap-peal the local wood crafters to use lo-cal wood species like albasia (Albaziafalcata) because many crafters todayremain to use teak,” he said.

Anomalous weather conditionwithin the past few months, assessedDarmaja, complicated the export pro-cess. The majority of export com-modities took sea routes being vul-nerable to weather disturbances.“There are some commodities whoseshipment is suspended because of badweather. Inevitably, the commoditiesexported declined in terms of volumeand value,” he said. (par)

“Taking everything into ac-count, and having discussed thematter with my family, I have de-cided on my own counsel to stepdown as uachtarain (president) ofFianna Fail and leader of FiannaFail,” Cowen told a hastily-ar-ranged news conference in acramped Dublin hotel room.

“I will continue in my role asTaoiseach (prime minister) as Ihave before.” Martin, 50, had pub-licly called for Cowen to quit be-fore Tuesday’s vote and steppeddown from his foreign ministrybrief afterwards.

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea released a video Sunday of a dramaticraid by commandos on a hijacked ship in the Arabian Sea that rescued all 21crew members and killed eight Somali pirates. The 4 1/2-minute video providedby the military shows parts of the pre-dawn raid Friday, which came a weekafter pirates seized the cargo ship and its crew of eight South Koreans, two Indo-nesians and 11 Myanmar citizens.

Friday’s raid was a triumph for SouthKorea’s president and military. Both cameunder harsh criticism at home for being tooslow and weak in their response to a NorthKorean attack in November on a South Ko-rean island near disputed waters that killedtwo marines and two civilians.

It came on the same day that Malaysia’snavy successfully rescued a chemicaltanker and its 23 crew members from So-mali pirates. Seven pirates were appre-hended. Despite the two recent successfulraids, the European Union Naval Force hassaid it will not follow suit because suchraids could further endanger hostages. So-malia has not had a functioning govern-ment since 1991, during which time piracyhas flourished off its coast.

There are now 29 vessels and 703 hos-tages being held by pirates off the coast ofSomalia. The country lies next to one ofthe world’s most important shipping routes, which connects the Indian Ocean to theSuez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea be-yond.

Despite the boom, many workers say theyare not paid well and receive poor retirementbenefits. Last month at least four garmentworkers were shot dead by police in thecountry’s southeastern port city ofChittagong.

Bangladesh’s 4,500 garment factories, which produce clothes for retailers such asWal-Mart, H&M and Levi Strauss, pay theirthree million workers a minimum 3,000 taka(43 dollars) a month.

Former members of Ben Ali’s RCD rul-ing party retain key ministries, notably in-terior, defense and foreign affairs. Five such appointeesquit the cabinet within a day ofGhannouchi forming it.

on Friday, Ghannouchi said he intendedto retire from politics after organizingelections. But despite signs many Tuni-sians would like to see a return to calm, his words have failed to stem the protests.

Ghannouchi also sought to distancehimself from the former leader. He vowedto track him down and promised compen-sation for the families of victims of hu-man rights abuses. Authorities have saidthey arrested 33 members of Ben Ali’sfamily for crimes against the state but haveonly named one of them — Imed Trabelsi,a nephew of Ben Ali’s wife Leila.

“This revolt is not the Jasmine Revolu-tion, because jasmine is a flower that any-one can just pick,” said Mohamed AliZdini, a Tunisian who lives in Italy. “Thisrevolution is more like an olive tree, be-cause it has deep roots and no one can up-root it.” Sunday was the last of three daysof national mourning declared by theGhannouchi government for the victimsof the unrest that convulsed Tunisia forseveral weeks.

Officials said on Saturday they wouldinvestigate the interior ministry’s role inthe deaths of protesters and revise laws toprevent the rise of another strongman. Po-lice themselves demonstrated in Tunis onSaturday to declare their innocence ofcrimes against the people and to portraythemselves as victims.

The interior minister has said 78 peoplehad been killed since the start of the dem-onstrations in December, but the U.N.High Commissioner for Human Rights putthe number at 117, including 70 killed bylive fire.

There is no evidence yet thatthe disease can be transmittedfrom human to human but thetourists who contracted with thedisease were living on the sameplace. Mangku Pastika explainedthat there is a possibility that thehotel didn’t preserve their sani-tation and hygiene so the 11 tour-ists who stayed there infected bylegionella.

SINCE the past three years, many beaches in Buleleng have al-ways been slugged by big waves. As a result, the abrasion is gettingmore and more severe. The latestincident was the big waves sluggingthe beaches in Buleleng on Wednes-day (Jan 12) and causing tens ofhectares of rice fields to be erodedinto the sea.

The worst damage occurred inthe coastal region of Bungkulan Vil-lage, namely at the SubakSanghyang Ai and Subak Guliang.Since the past three years, the ricefields on the seaside of BungkulanVillage had been slugged by bigwaves for three times. Such tidalwaves customarily ensued in theearly months of the year, such asJanuary to March. For three years, farmers at the Subak Sanghyang Aiand Subak Guliang had suffered aloss at least ten hectares of ricefields as eroded into the sea.

Similar condition also ensued atother location. Estate land in the re-gion of Pemaron Village, Buleleng, also vanished into the sea. A num-ber of palm trees originally growingon the land had now disappeared as

DENPASAR – Farming is still astrategic business in Bali whichhighly depends on the developmentof tourism industry. I Gede Suarsa, the head of Bali Statistics Depart-ment, said that the high price of theproduct make farming is very po-tential for the Balinese.

DENPASAR – Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika statedthat the government has been carrying out the necessary stepsto prevent the spread of legionella disease. “I had ordered allrelated departments to prevent the spread of the disease. TheHealth Department had carry out inspection and told the hotelsto increase their cleanliness,” he added.

“I have met the ambassador ofAustralia in Denpasar and explainthe situation to him. After a briefdiscussion, the Australian Govern-ment agreed to revoke the traveladvisory immediately,” MangkuPastika said.

From 11 tourists who are in-fected with legionella disease, nine of them are Australian and therest are coming from the Nether-lands and France. Most of the tour-ists stay in Bali for short periodof time which is 7 to 10 days.

Most of them are above 45years old, the age consideredprone to the disease. Legionella isan infection cause by theLegionella sp bacteria. The bacte-ria attack the lungs of the sufferer. The disease was found for the firsttime in Bali in 1976 and withoutthe proper handling it could leadto the death of the sufferer.

Farming still potential in Balibanana are the produce highly inBali. However, the salacca is de-creasing in the past few months. Thiscondition is because the price of thefruit is very low so many salaccafarmers turn their business into ricefield.

It also affected by the importedfruit from other countries or evenother area in Indonesia. Many of thesalacca from other province are bet-ter than the one in Bali.

While in the vegetables area, on-ion, cabbage, tomato and long beanare the highest commodities compareto other.

Sea sand theft stays rampant

Coastal abrasionin Bulelengincreasingly serious

eroded by the waves and swept awayinto the sea. Even, the beaches pro-tected by revetment had ruined. Likeat Sangsit and the surrounding area, the seaside revetment used to tacklethe huge waves was even destroyed.

The Head of Buleleng PublicWorks, Nyoman Gede Suryawan, admitted that coastal erosion inBuleleng had been getting worse. For several years, the abrasion wasrecorded to reach 48 kilometers ofcoastline. Of that amount, as muchas about 35 kilometers had been ad-dressed by making concrete andstone revetment. However, the restwas unable to be repaired becausethere was no budget for the abrasionprevention within this year.

Meanwhile, the former Head ofthe Bali-Penida River Area, JroNyoman Ray Yusha, said the coastalerosion was not only happening inBuleleng. Almost all beaches in In-donesia suffered from abrasion. Itwas caused by global warming dueto ice melting in the North Pole. But,in Buleleng the causes of abrasionwere more complex. One of themwas the rampant sea sand theft com-mitted by local residents. In addition,

many residents remained to look fora lot of gravel scattered on the beachin the area of Tejakula. “Sand theftis still happening. It is proven that alot of people stay to sell craft itemsmade of sea sand,” he said.

Nevertheless, according to RayYusha, the government could not di-rectly blame the people who did thetheft. According to him, local resi-dents stole the sea sand because theywant to meet their daily bread andbutter. They were mostly poorpeople having no other job. “Well, the matter of indigent people shouldbe resolved by government,” he said.

Ray Yusha who often handled theabrasion prevention project whenserving as the Head of the Bali-Penida River Area said that govern-ment should address first the rootsof the problem why people were stillcontinuing to steal the sea sand.Government should immediatelyresolve poverty, especially amongthe coastal residents, for example byproviding job opportunities. “If theyhave been prosperous, the theft ofsea sand will no more occur. On thataccount, the rate of abrasion can bediminished,” he said. (ole)

Today, children have unlimitedchoices of games. They have beenpampered by modern games, ranging from Turtle Ninja, KungFu, war games and many more. These can make them stay forhours in front of television orcomputer. Yet, behind this easeand enjoyment, they lose somevalues like creativity and do notknow they have traditional games.

It is said so because there is atrend where children, both in ur-ban and rural areas, begin to leavetheir traditional games. Manygame options have been availablein the form of CD, DVD, Internetand cartoon in television. Just byCD rental or buying the cheapestone and sitting down sweetly, theycould enjoy the games they likebest. If the games contain compe-tition, they will compete againstmachine or some times againstfriends. Without realized, thismay result in sight disorder wherechildren should gaze the monitorand finally require thick glassesat earlier age.

Advancement is not alwaysbad. However, parents shouldcontrol them to what extent thosegames could drive good impact. Before the presence of these mod-ern games, there were many tra-ditional games. They are no lessinteresting than the modern ones. Many children even find it attrac-tive and make them creative.

More-over, they have to maintain the har-mony of steps with the pulling ofrope connected to each coconutshell. When the pull and steps cango harmoniously, the player canwalk faster. Balance is also en-tailed in walking on stilts or tajogor egrang. This game is evenriskier because the position ofpedal is higher from the ground. However, when a player can oper-ate these stilts properly it is morechallenging and pleasant. Thehigher the pedal the more chal-lenging it is. Walking on stiltslooks like a walking long-leggedheron. It would be more interest-ing when passing through a muddyor knee-deep watery road. Thesegames are often put into competi-

tion related to traditional sports.Another game requiring coop-

eration is pulling the sheath ofareca nut. If the bean of areca nutis used by grandfathers or grand-mothers for ingredient of chewingbetel, the sheath of it is used bytheir grandchildren to make ‘a pull-ing vehicle’. Yellow leaf signifiesit has been mature. It is time forchildren to take it. They just needto leave out the ribs of leaf. Themain rib is not cut as it will be usedto pull. One child serves as passen-ger while another as driver whopulls the sheath. This role is ex-changed so both can have an op-portunity to enjoy the ‘comfort’ ofthis vehicle game.

Children also put an interest indancing barong gallivanting show. For them, it has been designed asmaller-sized barong. Therefore, before growing adult they havebeen introduced to art world ofadult people. By performing galli-vanting show like this, they willobtain experience and earn money. However, the emphasis here is noton the money, but on the experi-ence and fun.

Actually, there are more tradi-tional games that once lived inmidst of Balinese community. Ihope that Bali Arts Festival haverevealed them one by one soyoung generation can know theirtraditional heritages. Maybe, hav-ing watched or played moderngames they could combine withthe traditional ones they have. Atleast, the traditional can becomean alternative, as all raw materi-als have been available at theirsurroundings. (BTN/punia)

LONDON – Britain’s banks needmajor reforms as their failure to man-age risks had been “spectacular,” thechair of the Independent Commissionon Banking said on Saturday.

Economist John Vickers, whoheads a body reviewing whether tosplit banks’ investment and retail en-tities, said taxpayers should not haveto provide “a generous safety net” tostop banks from collapsing.

“For the most part, retail custom-ers have no effective alternative totheir banks for vital financial services, and hence there is an overriding eco-nomic, social and political imperativeto avert any disruption to the continu-ous provision of those services,”Vickers said.

“The task is to find better ways ofensuring this, if possible, while allow-ing unsuccessful individual institu-tions to fail safely,” he said in a speechat the London Business School.

“Ultimately, financial risks have tobe borne, and in a market system theyshould not be borne by the taxpayer

Heading quickly into re-elec-tion mode, Obama is expected touse Tuesday’s prime-time speechto promote spending on innovationwhile also promising to reduce thenational debt and cooperate withemboldened Republicans.

“I’m focused on making surethe economy is working for every-body, for the entire American fam-ily,” Obama said Saturday in anuncommon preview of his speech, offered up in an online video to hissupporters late Saturday after-noon. The president announcedthat the economy would be themain topic of his speech, a nod tohow important that issue is to thecountry’s standing and his own aswell.

At the halfway point of histerm, Obama said the economy ison firmer footing than it was twoyears ago: it is growing again, al-beit slowly, while the stock mar-ket is rising, and corporate profitsare climbing. But with the unem-ployment rate stubbornly stuckabove 9 percent, Obama will sig-nal a shift Tuesday from short-term stabilization policies towardones focused on job creation andlonger-term growth.

Obama offered no details onspecific proposals he will call forin his address, though he has of-fered hints in recent weeks.

Perhaps the clearest came in anoverlooked speech in North Caro-lina last month, one that will likelyserve as a template of what the na-tion is about to hear. Obama saidthen that making the U.S. morecompetitive means investing in amore educated work force, com-mitting more to research and tech-nology, and improving everythingfrom highways and airports tohigh-speed Internet.

In his weekly radio and Internetaddress Saturday, Obama alsohighlighted free trade as a way toincrease U.S. exports and putAmericans to work.

“That’s how we’ll create jobstoday,” Obama said. “That’s howwe’ll make America more com-petitive tomorrow. And that’s howwe’ll win the future.”

Obama’s challenge will be tofind the money and political willto spend it, at a time when he’spledged to reduce spending and

SEATTLE – Facebook is prepar-ing to open its books this year orearly in 2012 to give investors aglimpse into the financial workingsof the world’s No. 1 social network, after it sealed an oversubscribed $1.5billion round of financing led byGoldman Sachs.

The financing, $1 billion of whichis from Goldman Sachs’ overseasclients and $500 million fromGoldman itself and Russian invest-ment firm Digital Sky Technologies, gives the company a projected valueof $50 billion, setting the stage forwhat could be one of the largest ini-tial public offerings next year.

Facebook, founded in a Harvarddorm room in 2004, said it wouldbegin to file public financial reportsno later than April 30, 2012, in astatement detailing the new invest-ment.

United States securities regula-tions require companies with morethan 499 shareholders to disclose fi-nancial information whether they arepublicly traded or not. Facebook ex-pects to exceed that number sometime this year.

The new funding was organizedby investment bank Goldman Sachs, which raised $1 billion from non-U.S. investors in a fund thatFacebook said was oversubscribed.

WASHINGTON – Under pressure to energize the economy, President Barack Obama said Sat-urday he will use his State of the Union address to outline an agenda to create jobs now and boostAmerican competitiveness over the long term.

tackle the mountainous debt. Inhis preview to supporters Satur-day, Obama said he would empha-size fiscal restraint Tuesday, butdidn’t go into detail, saying onlythat any spending cuts should bedone in a “responsible way.”

The president is under growingpressure to tackle the debt fromthe public and lawmakers, particu-larly some newly elected Repub-licans who ran on pledges to cutspending. Obama, too, has madespending cuts a priority, setting upa bipartisan fiscal commissionwhich recommended tax hikes andcuts to entitlement programs —both efforts that would likely bea hard sell with the Americanpeople.

Obama will speak Tuesday toa Congress changed both by Re-publican wins in the Novemberelection and the attempted assas-sination of one of its own. Demo-cratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords wasshot in the head two weeks agoduring an event in her district inTucson, Ariz.

Since then, the president hasappealed for more civility in poli-tics, and in a nod to that ideal, some Democrats and Republicanswill break with tradition and sitalongside each other in the Housechamber Tuesday night. Obamahinted Saturday that he wouldbuild on that theme during theState of the Union, tying thecountry’s economic success to bi-partisan cooperation.

“We’re up to it, as long as wecome together as apeople_Republicans, Democrats,Independents_as long as we focuson what binds us together as apeople, as long as we’re willingto find common ground even aswe’re having some very vigorousdebates,” Obama said.

The White House sees competi-tiveness as a framework Republi-cans could support. GOP lawmak-ers traditionally have backed thetypes of trade deals and research-and-development efforts thatObama is promoting. Senate Mi-nority Leader Mitch McConnell,R-Ky., appeared to give the presi-dent an opening when he said lastweek in a speech that “my adviceto my colleagues is if the presi-dent is willing to do what we

would do anyway, then we shouldsay yes.”

Yet for all the talk of biparti-sanship, Obama will deliverTuesday’s address at a time whenhis White House is shifting intore-election mode. Obama plans tofile papers to formally run for re-election around March, and sev-eral aides are moving to Chicagoto run the 2012 campaign.Saturday’s video preview to sup-porters signaled a return to thecampaign-style outreach Obama’steam mastered in 2008, and un-derscored his need to rally hisbase around his agenda.

The White House is keenlyaware that Obama’s re-electionprospects likely hinge on the stateof the economy. More than halfof those questioned in a new As-sociated Press-GfK poll disap-proved of how he’s handled theeconomy, and just 35 percent saidit’s improved on his watch. Three-quarters of those surveyed did sayit’s unrealistic to expect notice-able improvements after twoyears. They said it will takelonger.

Obama’s preview Saturday fo-cused exclusively on his domes-tic agenda, with no mention offoreign policy. Obama is, how-ever, expected to frame his call forcompetitiveness in global terms, calling for a new Sputnik moment— a reference to the SovietUnion’s 1957 launch of the firstsatellite, ahead of the U.S. He in-tends to say the U.S. is again fac-ing challenges from abroad, thistime from fast-growing econo-mies in China, India and through-out Southeast Asia.

In his travels to Asia and dur-ing Chinese President Hu Jintao’srecent trip to Washington, Obamahas said he’s been struck by therapid rise of that region and thelaser-like focus on competing inthe global economy.

“They are thinking each andevery day about how to educatetheir work force, rebuild their in-frastructure, enter into new mar-kets,” Obama said in November, after wrapping up a 10-day Asiatrip. “We should feel confidentabout our ability to compete, butwe are going to have to step upour game.”

Initial projections from GoldmanSachs in documents circulated to po-tential investors earlier this monthindicated it was looking to raise upto $1.5 billion.

Facebook said it made a “businessdecision” to limit the offering to $1billion, without explaining further. It said it had no immediate plans forusing the money raised.

The company earned $355 mil-lion in net income in the first ninemonths of 2010 on revenue of $1.2billion, according to a document dis-tributed by Goldman Sachs to poten-tial investors earlier this month, theonly source of financial data on thecompany.

In December, Digital Sky Tech-nologies, Goldman Sachs and somefunds managed by Goldman in-vested $500 million in Facebook.

Facebook has more than 500 mil-lion users and is challenging big Webbusinesses like Google Inc and Ya-hoo Inc for users’ time online andfor advertising dollars.

LOS ANGELES – OprahWinfrey has staged many a familyreunion on her talk show. But onMonday’s episode, she promises, thedrama will be about her. Winfreytold viewers Thursday that she willhave a reunion of her own on “TheOprah Winfrey Show.” She wouldn’tsay with whom — only that it in-volves something she’s learnedabout recently and is known to onlya few people close to her.

“I thought I’d seen it all. But this,my friends, is the miracle of allmiracles,” Winfrey says in a promo-tional spot for the show. The word“miracle” appears on screen, rein-forcing her pronouncement. “I wasgiven some news that literally shookme to my core. This time, I’m theone being reunited,” she said. “I waskeeping a family secret for months, and on Monday you’re going to hearit straight from me.”

LOS ANGELES – A balletpsycho-thriller isn’t the typicalboxoffice juggernaut, but asDarren Aronofsky’s “BlackSwan” hit the $75 million markduring the Martin Luther King Jr.holiday weekend, Fox Searchlightreceived its most detailed break-down of who is fueling theseason’s surprise hit:

Women (big surprise!). About55 percent of the audience is fe-male (17-34 is the sweet spot),and many are bringing their boy-friends and husbands along.Women are giving the film a B+on CinemaScore; men are a bitless enthusiastic with a B, but thatis considered great for a horror/thriller.

People in small cities. Afteropening in 18 theaters, “Swan”upped its theater count from about1,550 to 2,328 and extended intosmaller communities, turning intop performances in Butte, Mont.,Guleph, Ont., Columbus, Ga.,Houma, La., and Bangor, Maine. The $13 million-budgeted film isdoing especially well in FrenchCanada and heavily Hispanic SanAntonio, even though Searchlightinitially didn’t spend much there.

And big-city types, too. Thetop-performing theater in the U.S.is the Regal Union Square in NewYork, where “Swan” will soon be-come its third-highest grosser ofall time, behind only “Avatar” and“Star Wars: Episode I The Phan-tom Menace” ($1.7 million each).Other top cities include Boston,Seattle and Chicago.

But not really. L.A.’s ArclightHollywood is the No. 2 theateroverall for “Swan,” but Search-light says the film hasn’toverperformed in the broader LosAngeles market.

TOKYO – A Japanese rocketcarrying supplies for the Interna-tional Space Station successfullylifted off from a remote island Sat-urday on a mission designed to helpfill a hole left by the retirement ofNASA’s space shuttle program.

The unmanned rocket —Japan’s second flight to the spacestation — was ferrying nearly 6tons of food, water, clothing andexperimental equipment to the as-tronauts in orbit aboard the inter-national project involving 15 na-tions. The rocket also was carry-ing cargo for NASA.

After docking with the spacestation, dropping off its cargo andbeing loaded up with waste mate-rial, the rocket’s transfer vehicle, named “Kounotori2,” will be de-tached and burn itself up upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.Kounotori means white stork inJapanese.

Applause broke out at the con-trol center on Tanegashima Islandas officials announced that thelaunch phase was a success. Track-ing was switched to a center inGuam as the vehicle moved rap-idly away from Japan. Kounotori2is expected to reach the space sta-tion on Jan. 27.

JAXA, Japan’s space agency, hopes the project will help it buildexpertise for similar low-cost fer-rying missions and push forwardmanned flights of Japan’s own.Cargo missions for the Interna-tional Space Station have becomemore important now that theUnited States has scaled back itsability to launch supplies. KATHMANDU – An injured wild tiger that strayed into a touristresort in Nepal has been moved to a new home in the jungle and fittedwith a satellite collar so its progress can be tracked, the government said. The tiger, an adult male, was captured after it wandered into the resorton the outskirts of the Chitwan national park in southern Nepal, a majortourist attraction, and nursed back to health by park authorities.

prove understanding of how the en-dangered animals behave in the wild.“This translocation — the first of itskind in Nepal — is a concrete ex-ample of our commitment to savingwild tigers using the best scienceavailable,” said Deepak Bohara, min-ister of forest and soil conservation.

The project is part of Nepal’s ef-forts to double its population ofRoyal Bengal tigers, which onceroamed the country’s southern plainsin large numbers but have been de-pleted by poaching and the destruc-tion of their habitat. A WWF survey

carried out in 2008 found just 121 adulttigers of breeding age in the country.

Krishna Acharya, Nepal’s head ofnational parks and wildlife conserva-tion, said Bardia was an ideal home forthe animal because it of its vast size, available prey and relatively low levelsof poaching. “Nepal is one of the coun-tries in the world where the prospect ofdoubling the tiger population is quitegood, if tigers are given enough space, prey and proper protection,” he added.

Experts say poverty and politicalinstability in Nepal have created idealconditions for poachers who kill theanimals for their skin, meat andbones, which are highly valued inChinese traditional medicine.

The WWF says tigers are in seri-ous danger of becoming extinct in thewild. During the last 100 years theirnumbers have collapsed by 95 per-cent, from 100,000 in 1900 to onlyaround 3,200 tigers, its says.

The number of addresses thatIPv6 allows for amounts to 340“undecillion” (followed by 36 ze-roes); enough for a trillion peopleto each be assigned trillions of IPnumbers, according to ICANN chiefRod Beckstrom. “I guess if we couldsomehow link an IP address to ev-ery atom, we might begin to run into

Galatasaray’s Kewellwas Australia’s hero, meeting a pin-point cross from Matt McKay andangling his header past Iraqi goal-keeper Mohammed Kassid to settle amatch that could have gone either way.

It avenged their 3-1 loss to Iraq inthe group stage four years ago, whenthe war-torn country went on to wintheir first ever continental crown. “It’sdefinitely a great achievement, eventhough we went into extra time,” saidAustralia’s German coach HolgierOsieck.

“We showed great character in thisgame. It was delightful for the coachto watch. Basically, we should havedone it in the regular 90 minutes. Iraq

played better in extra time.” Iraq coachWolfgang Sidka, who is also German, was disappointed not to kill off thegame and stay in the tournament. “Cer-tainly we are disappointed. But the waywe played was 100 percent okay,” hesaid.

“We created more chances in extratime and it was a very exciting fight forboth teams.” Former Liverpool andLeeds star Kewell was in the thick ofthe action and had several chances be-fore calmly converting his header as theclock ticked down. He said Australiadeserved to win. “They made it hard. Itwas a great game to play in but wewould have preferred not to go intoextra time. It was a job well done. “I was pleased with a goodteam performance. What helps isyou score the early goal, gettinga goal after a minute, they haveto open up. It’s a different per-spective you have to face and wecapitalised on that.

“It was a good scoreline athalf-time and I was able to takePatrice Evra off, gave him abreak by bringing on Fabio, andtake Ryan Giggs off which wasimportant because we have a biggame on Tuesday.”

Giggs turned in an eye-catch-ing display, which featured agoal, on the weekend that the 37-year-old has declared that hewishes to spend at least one moreseason playing for the only clubof his illustrious career. “RyanGiggs can easily play anotheryear,” said Ferguson. “He’s asfresh as a daisy, we look afterhim the right way and he man-ages himself the right way. Be-ing able to take him off was abonus.”

However, Berbatov — whohas now scored 18 goals this sea-son, 17 in the league, includingthree hat-tricks — was the realstar of United?s performance.

His pair ing with WayneRooney looks particularly explo-sive at present although the En-gland forward continues hismodest goal production.

Pedrosa has been seen as Honda’spriority rider in recent years, whenhe was paired first with NickyHayden, then Andrea Dovizioso. Petter Solberg says he would bein a much better position to fightfor victory if he returned to an In-tercontinental Rally Challengeround with Peugeot.

Solberg was forced to retirefrom the Monte Carlo Rally afterhis 207 S2000 was halted by analternator failure after the finalstage on the IRC opener. The 2003World Rally champion has nowbeen linked to an entry on the Tourde Corse, IRC round three in May.

AUSTRALIAN Grand Prix start2010Melbourne’s lord mayor Rob-ert Doyle believes the city shouldnot seek to renew its deal to hostthe Australian Grand Prix after itexpires in 2015.

The future of the race has beenin question for several years, amidconcerns over the level of statefunding it requires and the losses theevent has recently made.

In a column in today’s HeraldSun newspaper, Doyle argued thatwhile the benefits of holding thegrand prix since 1996 had beenhuge, the financial situation wasnow becoming untenable.

He listed four possibilities for thefuture: that “F1 supremo BernieEcclestone will pick up his bat andball and go home” and give the dateto another nation; that Ecclestone

Mayor: Melbourne should give up F1will insist on a night race and theevent moves “to a purpose-builttrack either at Avalon or Noble Park,or possibly elsewhere Sydney orPerth”; that Albert Park is upgradedand continues to host the race; or thatMelbourne decides to walk awayfrom F1 - which Doyle reckonscould be the best option for the city.

“The big stumbling block ... is thecost to the Victorian taxpayer,”Doyle wrote. “In 1996 when the racewas a combination of a four-dayevent and corporate sponsorship wasfar more generous than it is today, the race still needed to be underwrit-ten by about $1.7 million. Last yearit was $50 million.

“Fast forward to 2015, the yearthe franchise ends. Though the docu-mented benefits for the city may in-clude hundreds of millions of dol-

lars of advertising value, tens ofmillions of dollars of local revenue,an event that will draw between250,000 and 300,000 people overthree days will come at a cost thatwill approach 70 million taxpayerdollars. “It is the old argument: payup front but get many times thevalue of the upfront payment indownstream economic benefits.

“For most events that formula ispersuasive. But $70 million?”

He concluded: “The fourth andfinal possibility must be faced. Iknow of no city that has voluntarilywalked away from a grand prix, butcould Melbourne be the first?

“The final possibility is that wedecide that it has been 20 fantasticyears, the benefits to the city andthe state have been enormous, butthe cycle has run its course.

Dani Pedrosa says there will be no development hierarchyamong the three works Honda riders this year, and expects equalstatus for himself, Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso.

velopment efforts, Pedrosa said heanticipated absolute equality.

“This question is a little more forHRC but, okay, in principle duringthe pre-season things are tested andwhen the first race comes I supposethat the things that have been testedand chosen will be given to the rid-ers, all of them,” he said.

He insisted the addition of Stonerwould make no difference toHonda’s working methods, sayingthe team would operate “the sameas last year but with one more rider.”

Pedrosa is currently recoveringfrom winter surgery on the collar-bone he injured in a Motegi prac-tice crash. He admitted that the first2011 test at Sepang next monthwould be as much about assessinghis fitness as developing the bike.

“I am encouraged, because Novem-ber and December were tough, therewere a lot of problems and I was notwell, but as you start to improve andsee that the feeling is better, you areautomatically encouraged,” he said.

“I know that I will not be at 100per cent in the first test but if I cancontrol the bike well I will be happy. For me this is like a personal test tosee how I am.”
