Agung Rimbya Temaja, admitted tofeel satisfied with the competition ofthat time. Other than to express the cre-ativity of young people, the making ofogoh-ogoh was also to strengthen asocial relationship of Kesiman Custom-ary Village. Therefore, champion didnot become the main objective in theevent but maintained brotherhood thathad been running well at Kesiman.

Rimbya Temaja who is also theheadmaster of secondary school ofSMPN 1 Denpasar judged the traditionshould be preserved as a medium oflearning for young people and did notspend the Nyepi holiday meaninglessly. Therefore, the teacher of sustainableBali thanked God that Hindu devoteesat Kesiman should be grateful becauseKesiman villagers could perform theBrata Penyepian or abstinences includ-ing the high tolerance of other devo-tees during the Nyepi celebration.

Before the competition of ogoh-ogoh, in the morning at Kesiman theHindus held maprani worship at eachhamlet. According to Rimbya Temaja,it was an expression of gratitude tradi-tion materially and spiritually in orderdevotees could run the Catur BerataPenyepian well. Pepranian was an of-fering to all beings (sarwa prani = alllife) both for the visible and invisiblein nature. This showed the harmony ofhuman relationship to the Creator(God) and nature along with its con-tents. So, he said the Hindus were veryfamiliar with the nature along with itscontents.

Jro Mangku Penyarikan DalemKesiman Made Murdha added thatmaprani procession was full of socialvalues. So, on the maprani worship thehead of household mutually exchangedthe content of such prani offerings. Thismeant they mutually apologized as afoundation of devotees to carry out theCatur Brata Penyepian. (025)

Denpasar (Bali Post)Nyepi celebrations in residential

area around Buana Ayu, Jalan BuanaRaya, Denpasar, had been colored withpanic. One of the local residents, Bayu(35), began to be anxious from Tues-day afternoon until Wednesday morn-ing. It was unimaginable that his be-loved son, Daniel Marcelino (12), sud-denly disappeared mysteriously. Notonly Daniel, two friends of his, Markus(12) and Evan (12) have also disap-peared.

However, after a search conductedwith police officers, the boys wereeventually found. They seem to stay atMarkus’s house located not far fromDaniel?s house. They confessed tohave just been playing at Markus’shouse. They also admitted their faultfor not letting their parents know anddisabling their cell phones.

The disappearance of the boys wasmaking Bayu covered in panic. In fact,he went to Denpasar Police Station(Poltabes) with a motorbike despite theNyepi holyday. “I would like to reportsir. My child had been missing sinceTuesday afternoon. Until now(Wednesday morning-red), he has notcome home,” said Bayu to the officerat Poltabes Denpasar.

Other than Karangasem, particu-larly in the Amlapura city, the interfaithrelationship among the people of dif-ferent religions is good and mutuallyrespectful. This condition occurred upto villages such as Bebandem, Sindu,Sidemen, Buitan and Manggis whereHindus and Muslims lived side by sidepeacefully. In the midst of the Hindusestablishing Brata Penyepian, theadzan prayers of Moslem in a numberof mosques did not use loudspeakers.

One of them Amlapura?s residents,Made Arti, also claimed to be grateful, because all electronic media such asnational and local radio and TV sta-tions did not air this year in Bali. Mean-while, Ngurah Rai International Airportwas closed for a day, as well as a num-ber of harbors, including Padangbai,Karangasem, so that no aircrafts roaredthrough the air during the Nyepi as inthe previous years. “When I startedCatur Brata Penyepian, last Tuesday(Mar 16) morning it rained inKarangasem. Pecalang Chairman in KesianPekraman Village, Ketut Susila dis-closed the event of the passing

Bali Safari employees in the villagearea at around 11:00 a.m. When inter-cepted, the Bali Safari staff only showedletters relating to an emergency. Whenasked what the emergency was, he an-swered that he needs to find the rice.“Of course we were angry by his an-swer,” he explained.

Ironically, the letter indicated by theBali Safari employee contained the sig-nature of Village Secretary of Lebih. As traditional and religious activitiesare a task of the Pecalang, they directlygave a warning not to pass for a secondtime with emergency to find rice forthe Bali Safari?s employee.

Kesian Village Chief, Ketut Maruta,SE., said the offense committed by theBali Safari during the Nyepi celebra-tions will be discussed with the KesianPekraman Village officials first.

Nyepi is already known to theworld, even those who live inGianyar, so this incident was defi-nitely an offense. If it was about hos-pital or natural emergency, it wouldstill be tolerated. However, this wasabout rice, which is far in advancecan be prepared by

Bali Safari itself, considering thatBali Safari has a restaurant inside itsarea.

“We really regret the attitude of thecompany that did not care about theactivities of surrounding communities, especially in implementation of BrataPenyepian,” he explained. (kmb16)

Nevertheless, the Task Force andPecalang officers were unable to doanything to those fishermen be-cause they were at far distance. Okaalso claimed to have not been ableto identify the fishermen intended. However, based on monitoring bythe Task Force of Kuta Beach, thosefishing boats had been doing activi-ties every night for a week.

Head of Kuta Customary Vil-lage, I Gusti Ketut Sudira and Headof Kuta Subdistrict Weda Darmaja

once conducted a review to KutaBeach. In line with Oka, bothagreed if that deed was not allowedbecause it would have bad impacton the society of Kuta. “If the per-sons of fishermen were let do it,instead we are supposed to do so,”he said.

Meanwhile, in addition to vio-lations in the waters, implementa-tion of Nyepi actually lasted quiteconducive and orderly. Bayu attempted to search on his ownby calling a number of families. How-ever, Bayu?s efforts were useless andhis family members who were calledclaimed that Daniel was not in theirhomes. Since it is the Nyepi holiday, the only way out is for Bayu to report itto Poltabes Denpasar. “I had called hiscell phone, but it was always inactive,”he said.

Police at the time could not do much.It is not possible to conduct directsearch, because Denpasar residentswere still following the nyepi (silentday) rituals. We’ve found them,” Bayu said, while informing her son’s discovery viaSMS to a reporter yesterday. (kmb21)

BANGKOK – Thousands ofdemonstrators remained encampedin the historic heart of the Thaicapital Thursday, vowing to stir upa “class war” until the governmentis ousted.

A 2,000-vehicle protest rallythrough the streets of Bangkok wasplanned for Saturday, but Thursdayappeared to be a rest day after fourdays of mass demonstrations andshock tactics like the pouring of hu-man blood at the home of the primeminister and the seat of government.

Leaders of the “Red Shirt” pro-testers, who want Prime MinisterAbhisit Vejjajiva to call new elec-tions, said Wednesday they wouldscale back the size of their demon-strations in order to conserve en-ergy and resources.

The decision to stay encampedin Bangkok is meant to keep up thepressure on Abhisit, who alreadyhas rejected several of the protest-ers’ deadlines to dissolve Parlia-ment.

“It will be the beginning of aclass war,” said Natthawut Saikua, among the protest leaders whohave increasingly portrayed thedemonstrations as a struggle be-tween Thailand’s impoverished, mainly rural masses and aBangkok-based elite impervious totheir plight.

The 40-year-old Kyaw Zaw Lwinwas arrested Sept. 3 on arrival at thesame airport. He was initially accusedof plotting to stir up political unrest, which he denied.

He was sentenced in October forforging a national identity card, forpossession of undeclared foreign cur-rency, and for violating Myanmar’sso-called Resident Registration Act— under which he was accused offailing to renounce his Myanmar citi-zenship when becoming an American

citizen and failure to inform au-thorities of his new address.

“He looks well and happy, though much thinner than before,”said Khin Khin Swe.

“I am very happy for him but I wantfamilies of other prisoners of con-science to be happy and hope that allwill be released,” said Khin Khin Swe,who said five of her relatives are inprison, including her son-in-law.

Myanmar’s military governmentholds more than 2,000 political pris-oners, according to the U.N. andindependent human rights organi-zations. The most prominent is op-position party leader Aung San Suu

Kyi. The 1991 Nobel peace laureatehas been detained for about 14 of thelast 20 years, and is currently underhouse arrest, from which she is dueto be released in November.

Kyaw Zaw Lwin’s mother is serv-ing a five-year prison term for po-litical activities, and his sister wassentenced to 65 years in prison forinvolvement in 2007’s pro-democ-racy protests, which governmentforces brutally suppressed, activistgroups and family members say.

Kyaw Zaw Lwin, who was held ata prison about 180 miles (299 kilo-meters) north of Yangon was broughtto Yangon’s notorious Insein prison

Wednesday and handed over U.S.consular officials Thursday after-noon, said his aunt. As a teenager inMyanmar, previously known asBurma, he helped organize studentsduring Myanmar’s 1988 pro-democ-racy uprising and later fled to theUnited States. According to dissidentgroups, he is a resident of Maryland.

His reason for returning toMyanmar was not clear, but therehas been speculation he hoped to seehis jailed relatives. He staged a 12-day hunger strike in December toprotest conditions of political pris-oners in Myanmar, according tohuman rights groups.

The protesters also consist ofsupporters of former Prime Min-ister Thaksin Shinawatra, who wasousted by a 2006 military coup foralleged corruption, and pro-de-mocracy activists who opposed thearmy takeover. They believeAbhisit came to power illegiti-mately with the connivance of themilitary and other parts of the tra-ditional ruling class and that onlynew elections can restore integrityto Thai democracy.

“I’m asking you to be patientfor one more week. We willachieve true democracy and betterlives for Thais all over the coun-try. I understand that you must betired, hot and hungry. Be patientfor another seven days for ourchildren’s future,” Thaksin told hissupporters via a video linkWednesday night.

Newspaper reports said Thaksinwould be returning to his base inDubai, United Arab Emirates, af-ter a trip to Europe.

On Wednesday, red-shirted pro-testers hurled plastic bags filledwith their own blood into Abhisit’sresidential compound, followingsimilar protests the day before athis office and the headquarters ofhis Democrat Party.

Several thousand later gatheredin front of the U.S. Embassy, say-ing they wanted to tell the interna-tional community that their gov-ernment is illegitimate.

The blood-spilling tactic — saidto show the willingness of the com-mon people to sacrifice themselvesfor their cause and their nation —grabbed attention, but put the RedShirt movement no closer to itsgoal of forcing new elections.

More than 100,000 demonstra-tors converged on the capital Sun-day, and organizers boasted that theywould topple the government withindays. But the crowd shrank Wednes-day to around 40,000, according toMaj. Gen. Vichai Sangparpai, a met-ropolitan police commander.

After a strategy meeting, theRed Shirt leaders said they wouldkeep up their presence in an oldpart of Bangkok that is a traditionalvenue for political demonstrations.

MOSCOW – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton onThursday opened two days of talks with Russian leaders on nucleararms control and other security issues, and separately with top inter-national diplomats on the outlook for bringing Israel and the Palestin-ians back to peace talks.

Sergey Lavrov, and the two werethen dining with their U.N. and E.U.colleagues. Together they form theso-called Quartet of Mideast peace-makers; they are scheduled to holdformal talks on Friday.

The Quartet meeting was intendedto lend support for the start this weekof indirect talks between the Israelisand Palestinians. But those talks fellapart before they began — a casu-alty of Israel’s provocative approvalof new housing in east Jerusalem.

The diplomatic crisis erupted last

Tuesday, when Israel announced dur-ing a visit by Vice President Joe Bidenthat it would build 1,600 apartmentsfor Jews in disputed east Jerusalem, the sector of the holy city that the Pal-estinians claim for a future capital.Clinton called the announcement aninsult and “a deeply negative signal”for the peace process; she even ques-tioned Israel’s commitment to its re-lationship with the U.S.

Clinton’s spokesman, P.J.Crowley, said she was awaiting aphone call from Israeli Prime Min-ister Benjamin Netanyahu for clari-fication on how the Israeli govern-ment intends to respond to a U.S.call for rescinding the east Jerusa-lem housing decision and to make agesture of renewed commitment toengaging seriously with the Pales-tinians in peace talks.

PHILADELPHIA – Whether shewas seeking love or vengeance, or justan escape from her dreary, small-townexistence, Colleen LaRose searchedthe Internet and found Muslim extrem-ists eager to engage the unhappyAmerican.

LaRose, 46, spent long dayschained to her Pennsburg, Pa., apart-ment caring for an elderly parent. Now,“Jihad Jane” may now spend her lifein prison — unless she persuades aU.S. judge she is not a security threat.

On Thursday, LaRose makes herfirst court appearance since a stunningindictment last week that charged thatshe plotted with terror suspects abroadto kill a Swedish artist who had of-fended Muslims.

LaRose’s appearance may offerclues to her mental state after sixmonths in a Philadelphia prison.

The Council on American-IslamicRelations has questioned the religiousdevotion of alleged converts likeLaRose, given her live-in boyfriendand apparent failure to ever pledge herfaith at a mosque.

“Maybe it’s not the Islamic faiththat is making them do this; maybe it’sjust their personal demons,” saidIbrahim Hooper, national communica-tions director for CAIR.

LaRose spent most of her life inTexas, where she dropped out of highschool, married at 16 and again at 24,and racked up a few minor arrests. After a second divorce, she followeda boyfriend to Pennsylvania in about2004 and began caring for his fatherwhile he worked long hours, some-times on the road. In 2005, she swal-lowed a handful of pills in a failed sui-cide attempt, telling police she wasupset over the death of her father —

His father Raja Naqqash Saeedflew into Pakistan on Thursday andwas reunited with his son at theBritish high commission inIslamabad, an official at the dip-lomatic mission told AFP.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Joy-ful parents on Wednesday recoveredthe children that they gave to Ameri-can missionaries about six weeks ago.

The 33 children had been livingat the SOS Orphanage on Port-au-Prince’s outskirts since policestopped a group of 10 U.S. Baptistmissionaries from taking themacross the Dominican border Jan. 29following Haiti’s devastating earth-quake.

Orphanage officials said all butone of the children were given backto 22 families. A remaining child, whose age and gender were notgiven, is awaiting further verifica-tion of her parents’ identities.

The lengthly verification process, led by Haitian social services au-thorities, is why the reunificationstook so long, orphanage spokes-woman Line Wolf Nielsen said. TheAssociated Press determined infor-mally that all 33 had at least one liv-ing parent in February.

The children had been underfedand some were incontinent fromstress, the orphanage said. OnWednesday they were dressed intheir Sunday best to return homewith parents who had given themaway to foreigners a month and ahalf before.

Many will go back to living un-der bed sheets or in tin shacks be-cause their parents homes were de-stroyed by the quake. Some childrenand orphanage workers cried as theyleft. The parents, who have had somecontact with the children in recentweeks, wore broad smiles.

Each family was given about$260 along with food and blankets. The orphanage has also been provid-ing counseling to the children, whothey fear will feel rejected, and toparents about the dangers of childtrafficking, Nielsen said.

ISLAMABAD (AFP) – A five-year-old British boy was reunitedwith his father in Pakistan on Thursday, a British high commis-sion official said following a kidnapping ordeal that saw a ran-som paid in Paris.

Spanish police announcedWednesday that a Pakistani manand a Romanian woman travelledto Paris to collect a ransom of110,000 pounds for Sahil and werethen arrested in the northeasternSpanish town of Constanti.

Another Pakistani man was alsoarrested in Constanti while Frenchpolice detained two family mem-bers of the man who went to Paris, accusing them of being accom-plices.

This undated file image pro-vided by the SITE IntelligenceGroup shows Colleen LaRose,an American woman fromPennsylvania indicted and ac-cused of using the Internet torecruit jihadist fighters andhelp terrorists overseas

Jihad Jane’ due in federal court in Philadelphiabut did not want to die.

As she moved through her 40swithout a job or any outside hobbies, her boyfriend said, she started spend-ing more time online.

Though her boyfriend, KurtGorman, did not consider her religious, and she apparently never joined amosque, LaRose had by 2008 declaredherself “desperate” to help sufferingMuslims in a video she posted onYouTube.

“In my view, she sort of slippedsideways into Islam. ... There mayhave been some seduction into it, byone or more people,” said TempleUniversity psychologist Frank Farley.

LaRose and Gorman shared anapartment with his father in Pennsburg,a quaint if isolated town an hour north-west of Philadelphia. Just days afterthe father died last August, she stoleGorman’s passport and fled to Europewithout telling him, making good onher online pledge to try to kill in thename of Allah, according to the indict-ment. From June 2008 through herAug. 23, 2009, departure, the womanwho also called herself “Fatima Rose”went online to recruit male fighters forthe cause, recruit women with west-ern passports to marry them, and raisemoney for the holy war, the indictmentcharged.

She had also agreed to marry oneof her overseas contacts, a man fromSouth Asia who said he could dealbombs and explosives, according to e-mails recovered by authorities.

He also told her in a March 2009 e-mail to go to Sweden to find the artist,Lars Vilks.

“I will make this my goal till iachieve it or die trying,” she wroteback, adding that her blonde Ameri-can looks would help her blend in.

Vilks questioned the sophistication

of the plotters, seven of whom wererounded up in Ireland last week, justbefore LaRose’s indictment was un-sealed. Still, he said he was gladLaRose never got to him. Although shehad written the Swedish embassy inMarch 2009 to ask how to obtain resi-dency, and joined his online artistsgroup in September, there is no evi-dence from court documents that sheever made it to Sweden. Instead, shewas arrested returning to Philadelphiaon Oct. 15.

Some terrorism experts wonder ifLaRose posed any serious threat toVilks or the United States — or wassimply a lost soul.

“People in distress blame the gov-ernment, and now blaming the gov-ernment means taking the side of theseMuslim terrorists,” said Ian Lustick, aUniversity of Pennsylvania politicalscience professor. “They’re about asjihadist as you and me, but they’re alot less happy.”

Haiti parents take backkids given to missionaries

Regilus Chesnel said he had tonegotiate with Haitian, U.N. and or-phanage officials before he was al-lowed to reunite with his children —ages 12, 7, 3, and 1 — and a 10-year-old nephew.

“I am thrilled. I feel like God hascome back to me,” the 39-year-oldstone mason said.

Chesnel said previously he hadgiven his children to Haitian pastorJean Sainvil, who was working withthe U.S. missionaries, becauseSainvil told him that dead bodiesburied under rubble in his El Citronneighborhood would breed disease.

Nine of the 10 Baptist missionar-ies involved in the case have beenreleased from jail and left Haiti.Group leader Laura Silsby remainsin custody at the police station thatis being used as Haiti’s temporarygovernment headquarters.

Judge Bernard Saint-Vil said allcould still be called to trial, and lastweek levied a new charge againstSilsby based on allegations she hadtried to take a different group of chil-dren to the border days earlier.

He heard new testimony Wednes-day from the police commissionerwho arrested the group at the bordercrossing.

The orphanage has received morethan 400 unaccompanied and or-phaned children since the earth-quake, of which 65 have been re-united with their families, Nielsensaid. The rest are being registered ina national database.

Florence Avrilier, 32, recoveredan 8-year-old boy she had givenaway. She said she kept her 12-year-old daughter because the missionar-ies told her they only wanted chil-dren younger than 10.

“I’m very happy. I had no hope Iwould ever get my son back again. This has been a very heartbreakingtime for me,” she said, putting herarm around the boy.

World.When US Vice President Joe

Biden visited Jerusalem, the Israeligovernment announced its plan tobuild 1,600 new houses for Jews onPalestinian territory.

“How is Obama’s stance on thismatter?” Rizal said.

In his speech at Cairo Universityon June 4, 2009, President BarackObama promised a new beginningin the United States’ relations withthe Islamic World.

“I have come here to seek a newbeginning between the United Statesand Muslims around the world; onebased upon mutual interest and mu-tual respect; and one based upon thetruth that America and Islam are notexclusive, and need not be in com-petition.”

“Instead, they overlap, and sharecommon principles of justice andprogress; tolerance and the dignity

of all human beings. I do so recog-nizing that change cannot happenovernight,” Obama said in his his-toric speech. Obama is scheduled topay a state visit to Indonesia nextweek. His planned visit has triggeredpros and cons in Indonesian society.

The Indonesian people at large, including moderate Muslims of thecountry’s two largest Islamic orga-nizations — Nahdlatul Ulama andMuhammadiyah, warmly welcomehis visit. But such conservative Is-lamic organizations as Hizbut TahrirIndonesia (HTI) rejects Obama’svisit, claiming it is aimed only atboosting America’s economic inter-ests in Indonesia.

Obama once lived in Jakartaalong with his mother and Indone-sian stepfather. During his stay inIndonesian capital for a couple ofyears, he attended local elementaryschools.

President regrets rallies opposing Obama’s visitphasized that Obama’s upcoming visitshould not be seen as a sign that Indo-nesia was under some form of pressurefrom the United States, Azra said.

The president said Indonesia is notat all under any kind of pressure fromthe United States, economically or mili-tarily. “Therefore, Obama’s visit doesnot mean that Indonesia will be depen-dent on the United States,” he added.

President Obama wanted tostrengthen cooperation between In-donesia and the United States invarious fields.

He explained that Obama had can-celed his plan to bring along his wifeand two daughters because he wasstill waiting for health reform processin the Congress and did not want togive the impression that he was on aholiday with his family in Indonesia.

Atthat time, their thought was focusedon God, while internally they per-formed self-evaluation and intro-spection. When people did the CaturBrata Penyepian without fire, activi-ties, fun and travel, on the next daythey terminated it through NgembakGeni. With the new spirit of the CakaNew Year 1932, people were ex-pected to rekindle to perform theirrespective svadharma. “We come tonormal activities, do our ownsvadharma optimally based on newspirit after introspection,” he said.

Rudia said, after conducting aseries of Nyepi ritual procession, people were expected to have a clearmind and clean heart. By doing so,they could face life’s challenges onthe present and future accordingly.

“After cleansing the spiritualmacrocosmic impurities and obtain-ing the Tirtha Amertha or holy wa-ter of life in the midst of ocean whenperforming Melasti procession, theyundertook the neutralization of buthaprocession in order to harmonize themacrocosm and microcosm onTawur Kesanga or exorcism rite, andthen implemented Catur BrataPenyepian on Nyepi day. As conse-quence, we must have confidencethat we are clean and neutral, so thatour behavior is clean and free fromnegative and destructive actions,” hesaid.

With a clean and pure mind,we welcome the Ida Batara TurunKabeh (IBTK) ceremony at PuraPenataran Besakih on the upcomingMonday (Mar 29). Through IBTKceremony on Purnama Kedasa weinvoke the Almighty God in orderBali along with its devotees wouldbe endowed with eternal bliss.

DENPASAR – The collaborationbetween Balinese dance and yogamovements which was created by theyouth from Shanti Sena AGP (AshramGandhi Puri) astounded the audiences.

With clear mind and heart, weexpect the implementation of the pre-text of democracy or simultaneousregional head election in five regen-cies across Bali in early May 2010could run smoothly without friction. In such democracy festivity, weshould be able to implement the con-cept of vasudaiva kutumbhakam—the world is my family.

Thus, familial or communityrelationship will not turn disharmo-nious because of different aspira-tions. We should be able to realize apeaceful life together. If we can carryout the election orderly and peace-fully that is our common victory.Conversely, it will become a collec-tive defeat if the election takes placechaotically. “Through introspectionprocess during the Nyepi, we dohope our wisdom increases, our con-duct is getting clearer and clearer aswell as freer from of negative nu-ance,” he said.

Similar judgment was deliv-ered by a lecturer from Hindu Uni-versity of Indonesia (UNHI)Denpasar, Wayan Suka Yasa. Hav-ing performed introspection duringthe Nyepi, then we are ready to docreative work in order to live a bet-ter life with passion and a newspirit. After observing introspec-tion, we know what needs improv-ing in the future. Let’s improve ourdrawbacks and perfect the imper-fect ones. ‘”So, after terminatingthe Catur Berata Penyepian, we areready to run our own svadharmawith new passion and spirit toachieve a more prosperous life. Weare ready to face everything with aclear mind and heart.

Agree with Rudia, Suka Yasasaid through the upcoming regionalleader election we would welcomea good leader bringing people to amore prosperous condition. With aclean conscience, hopefully wecould elect a leader who had capa-bility of protecting the people andmaking the people prosperous. (08)

In this picturesque venue, AdiBachmann and Agung Rai placed over40 from finally 65 of Adi’s modernsculptures. The sculptures are highlydifferentiated in ideas and shapes. Thesculptures mainly made from cementand concretes, and most of them arepainted by bright and intense colors.

Agung Rai, the founder andowner of ARMA Cultural Centerstated that the sculptures of Adi are sounique. Inside each sculptures expressan irony and some sense of humor thatwill make people that seen it smile andlaugh about it. He also said that thisnew kind of art sculptures should belearned by local artists. In fact, duringAdi’s creation on the sculptures he washelp by some local artists.

Rai also explained that this

kind of exhibition that will be held inthe open air is the first time in Baliand Indonesia.

Adi’s unique sculpture arrange-ments and single sculptures are wellplaced in the garden of ARMA’s. Thearrangement that quite interesting isthe one that being put near the entranceof the ARMA Cultural Center. TheGlobal Warming Conference 2020,Ubud, Bali is an arrangements that puttogether 13 sculptures of figures thatrepresent different times and geo-graphical areas who being lead byBuddha instead of Jesus Christ –be-cause this arrangement is inspired byChristian Last Supper. A delightful paradise of whiteand black sandy beach always drawsthe attention of visitors to soothe theirmind. Conversely, challenging wavescan encourage the adrenaline of surf-ers liking to ride the waves. To Ba-linese community, beaches are notonly used for taking pleasure and lifeactivities, but also for spiritual desti-nation.

Comfort and pleasure indeedbecome a desire of every single visi-tor. Above these, security is also im-portant. So, alert for any inconve-niences should be given a space amongthe pleasure enjoyed. By doing so,hopefully your holiday would be trulyimpressive with the beloved ones.

For your convenience of luxu-riating in the waves or lazing on thebeach, visitors must pay attention tosafety and security. Lately, as the lo-cal media carried few beach inci-dents afflicted to visitors or the lo-cals who were swimming or per-forming purificatory rites. In mostcases, they did not conduct their ac-tivities at safe zone.

Beaches of Bali have differentcharacteristics that mostly depend on

the topography of the region. However, most favorite beaches like Sanur, Kuta,Nusa Dua and its surroundings havebeen provided with warning signs likered flag indicating prohibited zone forswimming or other activities. The safezone for doing beach activities is be-tween two red-yellow flags. Moreover, these beaches have been secured bylifeguards. So, any further informationcan be obtained from the attendants atthe scene.

Probably, other beautiful beachesbeyond those destinations may not havelifeguards or flag signs. So, how toknow about the safe zones? Simply askto local residents nearby or fishermenwho happen to be encountered. Theyare usually very familiar with daily tidalcondition and the beach.

If there is no sign of safety, neverattempt to swim on the curved beachesbecause the streams at the area are usu-ally hazardous as it becomes the en-counter of two or more streams. Asconsequence, its hauling power is verystrong. Local people call this streamas sawangan. Similar stream may hap-pen due to encounter of stream withcape or long rock walls. Local people

ordinarily suggested children not toswim around the area.

Another thing needs paying at-tention is when having sightseeingnear steep rock. Such location is goodto take picture because the back-ground is ocean or beautiful waves.Often, without being realized it is thetime when the disaster comes, more-over it is the high tide. Sometimes, before taking picture or spreadingoblation for melukat or purificatoryrite, suddenly high waves surge. Onthat account, please always attemptto estimate the safest location to doso. Then, try not to turn your back tothe waves as any time they maysweep.

Hopefully, the light tips abovecould make your holiday on the islandreally comfortable and secure. Any-thing can happen anytime and any-where, not only on the beach. On thataccount, these are only reminders toanticipate any inconveniences. Someare based on empirical experience ofthe writer as often played on the beachand captured fish at lower course. Let’smake the holiday on the beach alwaysenjoyable! (BTN/punia)

BRUSSELS - The EuropeanUnion Wednesday accused its ma-jor powers of running away frombulging government deficits, asGreece said it could still seek IMFhelp if European backing did notease its debt crisis.

Germany meanwhile warnedthat repeat eurozone offenders de-served expulsion from the bloc.

EU budgetary watchdogs at-tacked overly “optimistic” growthassumptions masking bloated na-tional budgets, with Britain firmlyin the firing line over “uncertainty”in its spending plans.

Britain, France, Germany, Italyand Spain were among the nationslikely to fall short of reduction targets,as were most of the 14 EU nationswhose fiscal health was under scru-tiny, the European Commission said.

Its charges against Britainstirred tempers in London, amidfrenzied if unofficial general elec-tion campaigning.

Germany, accused of having abudget strategy that was “not suffi-cient to bring the debt ratio back ona downward path,” had earlier raisedtensions among the 16 nations in theeurozone.

Daggers are already drawnover the need to craft immediatecontingency bailout rules because offinancial chaos in Athens and fearsfor others including Portugal.

German Chancellor AngelaMerkel warned that Europe needs “atreaty framework in which it wouldeven be possible as a last resort toexclude a country from the euro if itagain and again breaks the condi-tions over the long-term.”

Commerce Secretary GaryLocke said Wednesday the admin-istration saw major opportunitiesin the energy sector as Indonesiaseeks to meet a sharp rise in de-mand while curbing carbon emis-sions blamed for global warming.

“Indonesia is going to be avast, steady market for green tech-nologies. Ensuring that Americancompanies play a lead role in thisenergy transformation is a prior-ity for President Obama and hisentire administration,” Locke said.

Warning that China and othernations were also eyeing the mar-ket, Locke said he would lead adelegation of 10 to 15 US greentechnology firms to Indonesia inMay to follow up on Obama’s trip.

But Locke urged Indonesia toreform its economy, noting thatsmaller nations in Southeast Asia, such as Singapore, traded morewith the United States.

“Economic nationalism, regulatory uncertainty, unresolvedinvestment disputes and lack oftransparency give pause to Ameri-can companies seeking to do busi-ness in Indonesia,” Locke said atthe Center for Strategic and Inter-national Studies (CSIS).

“If Indonesia is looking for apartner to address these issues, theUnited States is eager to lend as-sistance.”

Locke, without giving de-tails, said Obama would sign a“comprehensive partnership” withIndonesia on expanding coopera-tion on trade, education and otherareas. Obama will also visit Aus-tralia and Guam.

Despite being the fourth mostpopulous nation, Indonesia is the30th largest trading partner withthe United States, according to theUS Trade Representative’s office.

The nations conducted 21.4billion dollars in trade in 2008. TopUS exports to Indonesia were soy-beans, cotton, wheat and civilianairplanes, while Indonesian ex-ports included rubber, apparel andmachinery.

WASHINGTON - The United States sees vast potential toexpand trade with Indonesia but Jakarta needs to undertakeeconomic reforms, a top official said ahead of President BarackObama’s visit next week.

56 percent rise in energy invest-ment in only four years, Lockesaid.

Indonesia has taken some ofthe developing world’s most ag-gressive measures to fight globalwarming. The archipelago is thethird largest carbon emitter afterChina and the United States, duelargely to destruction of its forests.

Obama, who spent part of hischildhood in Indonesia, is hopingto use his personal connection toforge a new partnership with theworld’s largest Muslim-majoritynation.

The Obama administrationhas made Indonesia one of its topdiplomatic priorities, pointing toits moderate brand of Islam andrapid democratization since the1990s.

“There are certain forces inthe world that would seek to drivea wedge between the United Statesand Indonesia, but the bonds ofcommerce and of people-to-peopleexchange can be even stronger,”Locke said.

But some analysts doubtedhow much the two nations couldbring to the table on economic is-sues.

Indonesian President SusiloBambang Yudhoyono is embroiledin a major clash with lawmakersover a controversial 724-million-dollar bailout of a bank in 2008.

Obama’s fellow Democratsin the Senate have held up ratifi-cation of free trade agreementswith Colombia, Panama and SouthKorea on market access and laborrights concerns.

Yudhoyono “has becomevery cautious and his economic re-formers are not able to mobilizethe government to get agreementswith the US to open up invest-ment,” said Michael Green, whowas former president George W.Bush’s top Asia adviser and is nowa scholar at CSIS and GeorgetownUniversity.

“We’re also, frankly, on the USside, not terribly interesting rightnow in terms of trade strategy.”

Europe shames its major powers over debts A firm EU line towards Greece

appeared to be working, with theinterest Athens has to pay to borrowfalling to close to 6.0 percent, abouta whole point lower than two weeksago.

But Greek Prime MinisterGeorge Papandreou said he couldnot rule out an appeal to the IMF, ifEuropean backing was insufficientto help it out of its financial woes.

“If we realise that we indeedwill be borrowing at extremely highrates... there are other options,”Papandreou told reporters in Brus-sels.

“Nothing is excluded,”Papandreou said having been askedwhether seeking recourse to the In-ternational Monetary Fund remaineda live threat.

Britain’s deficit level, at 12.7percent of Gross Domestic Productor national output, is as high as thatof Greece.

Prime Minister GordonBrown’s government has pushedback spending curbs in the run-upto an election expected in early May.

Finance Minister Alistair Dar-ling on Tuesday described recom-mendations under the assessment, which had been leaked to Britishmedia, as “absolute madness.”

Darling told reporters in Brus-sels that the commission’s sugges-tion of faster debt repayments wouldbe like taking “just over 25 billionpounds (28 billion euros or 38 bil-lion dollars) out of the economy.”

Having stayed out of theeurozone, he said London would“note with interest what they say”but “make our own judgments.”

Britain’s state borrowing isexpected to balloon to a record 178

billion pounds in the 2009/10 finan-cial year, hit by multi-billion-poundbanking bailouts and weak taxationrevenues.

EU finance ministers will studythe commission’s recommendationswhen they meet next month inMadrid.

Speaking in the European par-liament just after they were revealed, the IMF’s managing director, France’sDominique Strauss-Kahn, said thatcountries should act now.

“Our own advice is that the so-lution for the rather big public debtthat most countries in Europe have toface now, is to try to solve it swiftly,”he said.

In a detailed assessment of com-mitments made to bring down post-recession excessive deficits, Brusselsstressed that a majority of “growthassumptions” given by EU memberstates were “rather optimistic” andthat broader economic conditions maybe “distinctly less favourable” overthe coming years than believed.

Only Bulgaria and Estonia wereon schedule to meet the EU’s three-percent-of-GDP public deficit targetwithin the allocated nationaltimeframes, it said.

France had a strategy that “doesnot leave any safety margin if eco-nomic developments turn out worsethan projected,” it warned.

Spain and Italy were alsothought likely to pull up short.

Sweden emerged as an exampleof probity, with the commission prais-ing the fact that “large surpluses ingood times allowed fiscal policy toplay an active role in the downturn.”

The others assessed were Aus-tria, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, theNetherlands and Slovakia.

Trump is reviving‘Apprentice’ with regular folks

NEW YORK – Donald Trump isn’t firing “TheCelebrity Apprentice,” but he’s bringing back theregular edition of the show with 14 ordinary job-hunters plagued by the economic crisis.

NBC and Trump said Wednesday they wantto put America back to work with the show, which is expected to air this fall.

The original civilian version of “The Appren-tice” premiered in 2004, then two years ago wasreplaced by the “Celebrity Apprentice” format.

“But since the economy went down the tubes, people have been saying, ‘Would it be possibleto bring back the original?” Trump said. “In away, it’s more important now than when we firstdid it.”

Trump’s revived “Apprentice” will recruitcandidates who have lost their jobs, are stuckwith jobs they don’t like just to get by or havefinished college with no offers in sight.

The only common denominator: “Everybodyhas to be smart,” Trump said. “They all have tohave brain power.” Taping begins this summer.

The winner will land a position with one ofTrump’s companies, as in the original. But therewill be an added twist each week for every can-didate who hears Trump’s dreaded words“You’re fired” in the board room.

“Instead of just sending them off in a cab,I’m going to sit and talk to them about their fu-ture — give them a little advice,” Trump said.

The current season of “The Celebrity Appren-tice” premiered Sunday and is expected back foranother run in spring 2011.

The changes at Kraft, the largestU.S. food maker, will affect more than1,000 products and eliminate morethan 10 million pounds of salt overthe two-year period, the companysaid. Kraft and other food makers havecut their use of sodium in recent years.Among other cuts, the company saidthis latest move will cut the salt inOscar Mayer Bologna by 17 percent,Easy Mac Cups by 20 percent andVelveeta by 10 percent.

“We are reducing sodium becauseit’s good for consumers and, if doneproperly, it’s good for business,”Rhonda Jordan, president of health &wellness at Kraft Foods, said in a state-ment. “A growing number of consum-ers are concerned about their sodiumintake, and we want to help themtranslate their intentions into actions.”

Health experts generally agreeAmericans eat too much salt and thevast majority of it comes from pro-cessed food. The excess is dangerousbecause salt contributes to high bloodpressure, which can lead to stroke, kidney disease, heart disease or heartfailure.

Email scam targets Facebookusers: Web security firm

The security firm said the attach-ment is actually a “password stealer”that is installed when a user clickson it and can potentially access anyusername and password combina-tion on that computer, not Facebook-related information.

“This threat is potentially verydangerous considering that there areover 350 million Facebook userswho could fall for this scam,”McAfee said in a statement.

The subject line of the scam emailreads: “Facebook Password Reset

Because of its huge membership,Facebook is a frequent target of com-puter hackers seeking to steal pass-words. In its 2010 Threat Predictionsreport released in December,McAfee said email “was increasingin popularity as the preferred methodfor targeting attacks against indi-vidual users, corporations and gov-ernment institutions.”

healthy adults to about a teaspoon, or2,300 milligrams of sodium, a day.People who are most sensitive to salt— African Americans, people withhigh blood pressure and others —should limit their daily intake to 1500milligrams, according to the Food andDrug Administration.

Kraft, which is based in Northfield,Ill., offers more than 100 productswith no sodium or what it calls lowor reduced levels. But a 2.05-ounce,single-serving Easy Mac Cup, forexample, has 700 milligrams of so-dium — about 30 percent of the rec-ommended average daily intake.

Among other companies aimingto cut sodium is ConAgra Foods Inc.,the maker of Chef Boyardee and He-brew National. ConAgra announcedin October that it would will cut so-dium 20 percent in the next five years.

Campbell Soup Co. has cut thesodium in more than 100 of its prod-ucts — including V8 juices, Pregosauces, Pepperidge Farm breads andsome of its namesake soups — by 25percent to 50 percent over the pastfour years. WASHINGTON – Hundreds of early human fossils, artifacts andforensically recreated faces of our prehistoric relatives went on dis-play Wednesday, exploring 6 million years of evolution at the NationalMuseum of Natural History.

search, said the permanent exhibitrepresents major changes in scien-tists’ understanding of evolution overrecent decades.

“What we’ve learned is the oldicon of the march from the earlyhumans from a primate like creatureto an ape like creature to us today isnot correct — that our species is partof a diverse family tree of perhapsas many as 20 species or more,” hesaid. “What we also see is we arethe only one left.”

That makes the story of evolutiona survival story, Potts said. The ex-hibit is the first to examine how cli-

mate change motivated adaptationsand changes in human ancestors.

Rather than focus on a singlespectacular fossil or discovery likemany evolution halls, theSmithsonian exhibit is built aroundthe major milestones of evolution —such as when humans began walk-ing upright, grew larger brains andbegan using tools and symbols.

“All of these things are part ofwhat it means to be human from thesense of our species,” Potts said.

Life-size bronze sculptures ofvarious early humans line the gal-lery to illustrate milestones, such asthe eating of meat and the control offire. One statue caught the eye of 6-year-old Surya Jain of Toronto, whose family extended their vaca-tion in Washington by a day to seethe new hall.

“I think it’s really cool,” he saidof the statue slightly taller than him-self. “My favorite part is the Homoerectus carrying this wildebeest, Ithink.”

His mother, Sonali Verma, saidthe many hands-on elements are sureto engage children as well as adults. They were among dozens of visitorswho lined up outside the gallery be-fore its unveiling.

“We’re trying to get visitors toconnect with their ancestors in a verydirect way,” said exhibits directorMichael Atwood Mason, noting sev-eral new approaches in the hall.

A “morphing station” allows visi-tors to have their photos transformedinto how they might have looked asearly humans and e-mail a copy tothemselves. Former Sen. Bill Frist, who is on the museum’s board, wasamong the first to try it out.

Casts and fossil scans also allowvisitors to see key discoveries fromrecent decades. Lucy, the world’smost famous fossil, has a corner. Sheis a 3.2 million-year-old early humanwho walked upright and climbedtrees.

Djokovic saved the first, but onthe second Ljubicic came up withanother big serve that the Serbiancould only sail back across thebaseline.

“But also two weeks ago in DubaiI was serving unbelievably,”Ljubicic said. “You can’t beat Novakonly with a serve, but it does helpyou a lot if you can get a lot of freepoints off that shot.” Djokovic saidhe knew what to expect.

“I don’t think any match we playis different,” he said. “It’s more orless based on the service and returns. As much as I get in the rallies, I thinkI have more chances to win the point. It wasn’t the case today.

Djokovic had looked far fromsharp since arriving in the Califor-nia desert, having to save three

match points to subdue Germany’sPhilipp Kohlschreiber in the thirdround.

“This is a tournament where Idefinitely didn’t feel comfortable onthe court,” said Djokovic, the 2008champion. “It’s just because I had avery tiring couple of weeks comingfrom Davis Cup, which was emo-tionally very exhausting for me.”

The tournament has now lost itstop two men’s seeds, after worldnumber one Roger Federer wasstunned by Marcos Baghdatis in thethird round on Tuesday.

That left Spain’s Nadal as thehighest-ranked player to make it intothe quarters as he withstood a bar-rage of 22 aces from the 24-year-oldAmerican Isner. Nadal closed it outwith a forehand winner into an opencourt.

“I am feeling really well, and I amfeeling good on court,” said Nadal, who is playing his first tournamentsince retiring injured from the Aus-tralian Open.

“I felt like I played pretty well,”Isner said of his first outing againstNadal. “I might have run out of gasin the third set, but that’s what hedoes. He makes you work so hardfor every point.”
