Review text of a book Boomerang Boomerang is a book about Michael Lewis Travels in the New Third World. Having previous authored The Blind Side, Moneyball, The Big Short and other books that sell in the millions, Lewis turns his attention to the economic plight of the whole world. He travels through Iceland, Ireland, Greece and Germany, to see how these countries have suffered by borrowing endlessly and frittering away countless trillions. At the end the joke is on America as he heads back to the U.S.A. and shows how this is where the problem began and this is where the problem will take deepest root. The book moves at a quick pace and is full of dark humor. Its also a little bit crude at times, and especially so in Germany, so do be warned. Here is an example of the books dark humor: As it turned out, what the Greeks wanted to do, once the lights went out and they were alone in the dark with a pile of borrowed money, was to turn their government into a pinata stuffed with fantastic sums and give as many citizens as possible a whack at it. If you read his chapter on Greece, youll see that this was exactly the case. If you want to know how the world got the way it is and if you want to understand the consequences of a worldwide feeding frenzy on cheap credit, you might be interested in reading Boomerang. 17. Narrative text King Midas King Midas was a very rich man. He lived in a castle with his daughter Phillomena. Phillomena was a very beautiful girl with a beautiful smile that everyone adorded. Phillomena ment everything to King Midas. One day Phillomena came up to her father and said "father there's a strange man at our gates," so King Midas held Pillomena's hand and went out side to see who this strange man was. To his amazment it was Silenus a friend of the god Dionysus. Instead of sending Silenus away, King Midas invited him to stay at his palace. King Midas enjoyed having Silenus around but soon it was time for him to go. The god Dionysus was pleased Midas had helped his friend and offered to grant Midas a wish. King Midas wished that everything he touched would turn to gold. Then he would be the richest man in the world. The god kept his promise and sure enough, everything Midas touched turned to gold. He went round his palace using his new power. But King Midas wish turned against him. He found that he couldn't eat or drink as all his food and wine turned to gold when he touched it! You stupid bird! pointed the man to the parrot. Why cant you say the word? Say Catano! Or I will kill you the man said angrily. Although he tried hard to teach, the parrot would not say it. Then the man got so angry and shouted to the bird over and over; Say Catano or Ill kill you. The bird kept not to say the word of Catano. 23. One day, after he had been trying so many times to make the bird say Catano, the man really got very angry. He could not bear it. He picked the parrot and threw it into the chicken house. There were four old chickens for next dinner You are as stupid as the chickens. Just stay with them Said the man angrily. Then he continued to humble; You know, I will cut the chicken for my meal. Next it will be your turn, I will eat you too, stupid parrot. After that he left the chicken house. The next day, the man came back to the chicken house. He opened the door and was very surprised. He could not believe what he saw at the chicken house. There were three death chickens on the floor. At the moment, the parrot was standing proudly and screaming at the last old chicken; Say Catano or Ill kill you. 24. Review text of a movie Titanic I went into Titanic with trepidation: it is being hailed as one of the best love stories depicted on film. Cynical as I am, I don't think much of movies with a romantic theme to them. However, I was curious to see the spectacle that director James Cameron had created. Fortunately for me, Titanic is not only great in terms of action, effects, and visuals, but also provides excellent commentary on the issue of the class struggle. Jack Dawson (Leonardo Di Caprio) is a young boy who wins passage to America aboard the Titanic in a lucky game of poker (upon boarding the ship, Jack tells to his friend that they are "the luckiest sons of bitches in the world"). Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) is travelling to America, to be married to Cal Hockley (Billy Zane), a situation she is not thrilled about. Sparks fly when Dawson manages to talk Rose out of jumping overboard, but tragedy awaits as the unsinkable ship hits and iceberg and begins to flounder. In the movie, this story is presented to the audience as a flashback. The narrator is Rose, 101 years old, with the last name Dawson. She tells the story to a treasure hunter (Bill Paxton), who is looking for the famous (and valuable) Heart of the Ocean, a diamond that was given to Rose by her fiance, Hockley. 25. The recreation of the ship, both the exterior (the rendering for which was done using Digital Alpha processors running Linux) and the interior are impeccable. The dialogue is witty and brilliant. The movie is slow at times, but reaches its climax when the ship begins to sink. The fact that Cameron takes his time in telling the story makes it all the more tense. Cameron could've skimped in any of these areas (dialogue, cinematography, effects, authenticity) and still come out with a great movie, but he doesn't. He sticks to the formula that has worked in other great epic movies, and he pulls it off one hundred percent. The ship was thought to be unsinkable, and so a compromise was made on the number of lifeboats aboard. When the ship did sink, it is the richest that got first priority on the lifeboats. While they waited in half-full lifeboats, they were exposed to the cries of people freezing to their deaths and didn't do a thing to help them. If a similar tragedy were to happen today, would the result be any different? The acting is excellent by all concerned, but I was most impressed by Zane. The nice thing about a ship sinking is that it is a relatively slow event, and Cameron takes every advantage of it. The depiction of the mighty ship going under is so much larger than life and I feel this is the most magnificent part of the movie. Just for that reason alone, Titanic is a movie not just to be seen, but to be experienced. So make sure you see it on the big screen. Narrative text GOLDEN EGGS Long time ago a remote village, in central China was inhabited mainly with farmers and hunters. One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God for help or his family would die of starvation. Few days later, an old man with long grey beard, passed by his house took pity on him. He gave him a goose and said I dont have any expensive thing to give you and hope this goose will help you to ease your hardship. A week later to almost surprise the farmer found and egg in his yard. This was no ordinary egg. It was a golden egg. He was suddenly overcome with joy. Thereafter, his livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier hardship. He became lazy, arrogant and spendthrift. Strangely, the goose only laid one golden egg every six months. The greedy farmer lost his patient and slaughtered his goose thinking there were plenty of golden eggs inside its stomach. Though he very much regretted for his foolishness, its already too late. 29. Review text of a book In the PlexPerhaps the most notable book of 2011 is Walter Isaacsons biography of Apples founder Steve Jobs. In a case of interesting timing, Steven Levy has written what is essentially a biography of Google, a company that has sometimes been an ally of Apple and sometimes a nemesis; today it is both. Levy traces the origins of the company through its founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Those two men found a way of doing something no one else had quite been able to master: making billions of dollars through online advertising. The near-endless streams of revenue generated by advertising has since allowed them to pursue innovation in other fieldsemail, social media, mobile communications and on and on. Like Steve Jobs, Page and Brin are very complex characters whose motives are difficult to understand. Their careers have been marked with great successes and some very public failures. Yet for good or for ill, and at times for both, they have truly changed the world. Not only do they continue to strive to make all of the worlds information available to all of us all of the time, but they have also changed the way we access it and understand it.
